Description
L'Eglise Clinet 2019 is widely regarded as one of the standout wines of the vintage from Bordeaux’s Right Bank, and a fitting swansong for the late Denis Durantou. This Pomerol is opulent yet rigorously structured, unfolding slowly in the glass with remarkable depth and complexity. It’s a wine of both emotion and precision, built for serious collectors and anyone who appreciates classic, ageworthy Bordeaux.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, L'Eglise Clinet 2019 shows a deep, opaque ruby-purple hue, signalling both concentration and youth. The nose is intensely perfumed, opening with dark berry fruit—blackberry, blackcurrant and ripe plum—layered with raw cacao, violets, black truffle, orange peel, warm embers and a subtle clay-earth minerality.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, dense and layered, yet remarkably silky in texture. A rich core of black fruit is interwoven with notes of cocoa, graphite, spice and savory earth, framed by ripe, finely powdered tannins and vibrant, balancing acidity. The finish is long, multi-dimensional and tightly coiled, indicating significant aging potential. While already impressive in its youth, this 2019 will reward patience, evolving beautifully over 15–25 years or more under proper cellaring conditions.
Production
L'Eglise Clinet lies in the heart of Pomerol on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, rooted in clay- and gravel-based soils that naturally favour Merlot and Cabernet Franc of exceptional depth and fragrance. The 2019 fruit would have been carefully harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness and selection in the vineyard and at the sorting table. Vinification typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse and structure, followed by aging in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) to add complexity, polish the tannins and integrate the wine’s powerful components without overshadowing its terroir-driven character.
Food & Serving
This is a serious, gastronomic Pomerol that shines alongside refined, richly flavoured dishes: think roast lamb with herbs, braised beef, pigeon or duck, veal with truffles, or a classic beef Wellington. Earthy accompaniments such as mushrooms, lentils and truffle-infused sauces highlight the wine’s dark, savory nuances, while aged hard cheeses or a well-selected Comté or Ossau-Iraty can also be excellent. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) and, given its youth and structure, decant for 1–3 hours to allow the aromatics and texture to fully open.
Producer
Château L'Eglise Clinet is one of Pomerol’s most revered estates, known for its small production and uncompromising pursuit of quality. Under the visionary stewardship of Denis Durantou, the château rose to the very top tier of Right Bank properties, earning a reputation for wines of both power and remarkable finesse that rank alongside the most sought-after names in Bordeaux. Durantou’s meticulous vineyard work, low yields and precision in the cellar transformed L'Eglise Clinet into a modern benchmark for the appellation, and the 2019 vintage stands as a particularly poignant and celebrated expression of his legacy in Pomerol.
