Description

Le Ragnaie Brunello di Montalcino Casanovina Montosoli 2020 is a single-vineyard expression from one of Montalcino’s most revered hillsides, crafted entirely from Sangiovese. This is a refined, terroir-driven Brunello that balances tension, depth and elegance, showcasing the purity and nuance that Montosoli is famous for. Produced in limited quantities, it’s a collector-worthy bottle that speaks clearly of place and vintage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Casanovina Montosoli shows a radiant medium ruby color with garnet reflections at the rim, typical of finely structured Sangiovese. The nose is lifted and precise, with aromas of wild cherry, redcurrant and blood orange weaving together with notes of dried roses, violets, sweet herbs, and hints of sandalwood, tobacco leaf and crushed stone. On the palate, the wine is vibrant and linear, offering a core of juicy red cherry, pomegranate and cranberry layered with savory tones of tea leaf, leather, dried thyme and a subtle saline, mineral edge. The tannins are fine-grained yet firm, giving an elegant architecture without heaviness, while the acidity is bright and mouthwatering, stretching the flavors into a long, focused finish. Though already alluring in its youth with its clarity and energy, this Brunello has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully over 12–20 years, gaining complexity and silkiness with time in the cellar.

Production
Casanovina Montosoli is sourced from a prized parcel on the northern Montosoli hill of Montalcino, an area renowned for its cooler exposures and limestone-clay soils that yield particularly aromatic and refined Sangiovese. The vines are farmed organically, with low yields and meticulous hand work throughout the growing season to ensure optimal ripeness and selection. Harvest is carried out entirely by hand, typically in small crates, with strict sorting of the grapes both in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation takes place with native yeasts in traditional tanks, often with gentle extraction to preserve finesse over power. The wine is then aged in large neutral oak (botti) for an extended period, allowing the terroir and Sangiovese character to shine without overt oak influence, before further refinement in bottle prior to release.

Food & Serving
This Brunello pairs beautifully with classic Tuscan cuisine and refined, savory dishes: think bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, game birds, ossobuco, or rich porcini mushroom risottos. Mature hard cheeses such as aged Pecorino Toscano or Parmigiano Reggiano also make a superb match. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy-style or Bordeaux stems to allow the aromas to unfold. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth is recommended to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; older bottles will require a gentler, shorter decant primarily to remove sediment.

Producer
Le Ragnaie is a highly respected, boutique estate in Montalcino, founded in the late 1990s and quickly recognized for its elegant, terroir-focused expressions of Sangiovese. The winery works several distinct vineyard parcels across the appellation, including some of the highest-altitude sites in Montalcino as well as the famed Montosoli hill, allowing for a nuanced, site-specific approach to Brunello. Farmed organically and crafted with a distinctly traditional mindset—long macerations, large neutral oak, and minimal intervention—Le Ragnaie has become a reference point for those seeking purity and finesse over sheer concentration. The estate’s single-vineyard bottlings, such as Casanovina Montosoli, are regularly praised by international critics and collectors for their precision, energy and aging potential, underscoring Le Ragnaie’s stature among the leading producers of Brunello di Montalcino.
