Description

Le Pin 2022 is one of the most coveted wines in Bordeaux, a rare Pomerol that combines hedonistic richness with remarkable precision. From a warm vintage and a famously well‑drained, early‑ripening site, it has retained striking freshness and energy, making it a standout even among blue‑chip Right Bank icons. This is an exotic, deeply layered expression of Merlot that showcases why Le Pin has become one of the most sought‑after names in the world of fine wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Le Pin 2022 presents a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue with a luminous rim, signaling youth, concentration, and impressive purity. The nose is seductive and intense, opening with sweet red and black cherries, wild berries, and ripe plums, intertwined with notes of licorice, violets, and subtle spice. A creamy veil of new oak frames the fruit, adding hints of vanilla bean, cocoa, and toasted cedar without overwhelming the wine’s florality and lift. On the palate, this is full-bodied and opulent yet beautifully balanced, with a sweet core of ripe, polished fruit that glides across the tongue. Layers of cherry compote, blackberry coulis, and blackcurrant mingle with exotic spice, graphite, and a touch of dark chocolate, carried by ultra-fine, velvety tannins. The texture is seamless and almost weightless despite its intensity, with a long, persistent finish that leaves impressions of violet and licorice. While already compelling in its youthful exuberance, the structure and concentration suggest excellent aging potential, with 15–25 years (and likely more) of graceful evolution ahead in a good cellar.

Production
Le Pin lies on the Pomerol plateau in Bordeaux, on exceptionally well‑drained gravel and sandy-gravel soils with pockets of clay that are ideal for Merlot. The small vineyard is meticulously tended, with low yields and hand harvesting parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness. In 2022, careful vineyard management was crucial to preserving freshness in a warm, dry year; fruit selection was rigorous, with only the best bunches making it into the grand vin. After gentle destemming and fermentation in small stainless-steel and/or concrete vats, the wine is aged predominantly in 100% new French oak barrels, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and extended élevage. This artisanal, micro‑cuvée approach—small lots, precision handling, and bespoke barrel aging—results in a wine of remarkable purity, texture, and complexity.

Food & Serving
Le Pin 2022 is a luxurious partner for refined cuisine, best matched with dishes that highlight its depth without overpowering its finesse. Think roasted lamb with herbs, veal tenderloin, beef fillet with truffle jus, squab or duck breast, or rich mushroom dishes featuring morels or porcini. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Comté or Parmesan. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to accentuate both aromatic lift and textural richness. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully unfurl; with bottle age, a shorter, gentle decant mainly to remove sediment will be sufficient.

Producer
Le Pin is a tiny, legendary estate in Pomerol that rose to prominence in the late 20th century and helped define the concept of the Bordeaux “garage wine” – small production, obsessively crafted, and extraordinarily sought after. Founded by the Thienpont family in the late 1970s, Le Pin quickly gained a cult following for its sensual, opulent style of Merlot, often rivaling or surpassing the region’s most established names. With just a few hectares of vines and minute quantities produced each year, it is one of the rarest wines in Bordeaux, highly prized by collectors worldwide. Despite its fame and high profile, Le Pin remains a true boutique operation, known for meticulous vineyard work, exacting standards, and a consistent ability to capture the singular character of its exceptional Pomerol terroir.
