Description
Larmandier-Bernier Longitude Premier Cru Blanc de Blancs NV is a precise, mineral-driven Champagne crafted exclusively from Chardonnay grown along a single chalky line of the Côte des Blancs. Named for the 4th meridian that virtually connects its villages, this cuvée captures the essence of pure, terroir-focused Blanc de Blancs. Extra Brut in style, it balances tension, elegance and depth in a way that has made Larmandier-Bernier one of Champagne’s benchmark grower-producers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Longitude shows a pale, luminous straw color with fine, persistent bubbles that form a delicate mousse. The nose is refined and chalk-inflected, opening with notes of lemon zest, green apple, white flowers and freshly baked brioche, layered with hints of almond, wet stone and a subtle saline edge.
On the palate, it is taut, linear and incredibly pure, with a vivid acidity that carries flavors of citrus, pear, crisp orchard fruits and a touch of quince. The chalky minerality from the Côte des Blancs frames the wine, giving it grip and length, while the perpetual reserve adds discreet notes of dried herbs, hazelnut and subtle pastry complexity. The finish is long, dry and mouthwatering, emphasizing finesse over opulence. While already beautifully expressive on release, this NV Champagne has the structure to evolve gracefully for 5–8 years, gaining further complexity and creaminess with time in bottle.
Production
Longitude is sourced from biodynamically farmed Chardonnay vineyards in the Grand Cru villages of Cramant, Avize and Oger, as well as the Premier Cru village of Vertus, all situated on the pure chalk slopes of the Côte des Blancs. The grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, then gently pressed to preserve delicacy and precision. The cuvée is composed each year from approximately 60% wines of the current vintage and 40% from a perpetual reserve that Larmandier-Bernier began in 2004, ensuring both freshness and continuity of style. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in a mix of tanks and large oak vessels, with minimal intervention, followed by extended lees aging in bottle. The wine is bottled with a very low dosage as Extra Brut, allowing the terroir character and natural tension of the Chardonnay to shine through.
Food & Serving
Longitude is a superb partner for refined, delicately flavored dishes. Think freshly shucked oysters, shellfish platters, scallop crudo, sashimi, and simply prepared white fish, as well as goat cheese, young Comté or light poultry dishes with citrus or herb accents. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 8–10°C (46–50°F), so the aromatics can fully unfold. A brief 10–15 minutes in the glass or a quick, gentle decant into a chilled carafe can help the wine open, especially with younger disgorgements.
Producer
Pierre and Sophie Larmandier run Larmandier-Bernier, a family estate long regarded as one of the leading grower-producers in Champagne, especially in the Côte des Blancs. Based in Vertus, the domaine has been cultivating its vineyards organically and biodynamically for many years, championing low yields, old vines and terroir transparency. Their focus on natural viticulture, indigenous-yeast fermentations and low dosage has made Larmandier-Bernier a reference for serious Champagne drinkers seeking wines of precision, depth and authenticity. Cuvees like Longitude have helped cement the estate’s reputation as a benchmark for mineral, Chardonnay-driven Champagnes from this iconic region of France.
