Description
Larcis Ducasse 2020 is a seductive and finely crafted Saint-Émilion red that captures the elegance and energy of the outstanding 2020 vintage in Bordeaux. More sensual and effortless than its stablemate Pavie Macquin, it offers depth and structure wrapped in a supple, luxurious texture. This Grand Cru Classé estate has long been admired by insiders, but in recent years has truly emerged as one of the most exciting names on the limestone slopes of Saint-Émilion.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Larcis Ducasse 2020 shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, signaling both concentration and freshness. The nose is expressive and inviting, opening with ripe black cherries and wild blackberries layered with notes of bay leaf, rose petals, licorice, and a subtle hint of crushed stone that speaks of its limestone origins.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a beautifully layered core of dark, juicy fruit framed by refined, silky tannins. Lively acidity lifts the richness, giving the wine both precision and a sense of flow. Flavors of black cherry, plum, blackberry and licorice are joined by delicate floral tones and a touch of savory spice, leading into a long, full, and graceful finish. Still youthful, this 2020 has excellent aging potential and should evolve beautifully over the next 10–20 years, gaining further complexity and harmony.
Production
Château Larcis Ducasse is situated on the prized limestone plateau and slopes of Saint-Émilion, an area renowned for producing some of the Right Bank’s most refined and long-lived wines. The vineyards are planted primarily to Merlot with a significant portion of Cabernet Franc, rooted in limestone and clay-limestone soils that naturally limit vigor and enhance mineral tension in the wines. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in small lots, parcel by parcel, at optimal ripeness to preserve balance and aromatic purity. Vinification is carried out with great precision—gentle extraction, temperature-controlled fermentations, and careful selection of lots—followed by maturation in French oak barrels, a proportion of which are new, to polish the tannins and build complexity without overwhelming the estate’s distinctive terroir expression.
Food & Serving
Larcis Ducasse 2020 is a versatile partner at the table, shining alongside roast lamb with herbs, duck breast, beef tenderloin, veal, or richly flavored dishes like braised short ribs or mushroom risotto. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses and earthy preparations featuring truffle or wild mushrooms. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth is recommended to allow the wine to unfurl its layers; with additional bottle age, a shorter decant or even a generous pour in large-bowled glasses will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Larcis Ducasse has a history stretching back several centuries on the hallowed slopes of Saint-Émilion, and today is recognized as one of the appellation’s benchmark Grand Cru Classé properties. Its privileged position on the limestone coteau gives it a terroir shared with some of the region’s most illustrious neighbors, and under the modern stewardship of a quality-focused team, the estate has risen to new heights. Careful vineyard work, low yields, and precision winemaking have earned Larcis Ducasse consistent critical acclaim and a reputation for producing wines that combine sensual texture with classical structure—wines that are both deeply pleasurable young and capable of long, graceful aging.
