Description

Laherte Frères Champagne Petit Meslier Extra Brut is a rare, characterful grower Champagne crafted from one of Champagne’s most obscure and old native varieties. Made from 100% Petit Meslier and finished in an Extra Brut style, it offers razor‑sharp freshness, fine detail and a distinctly artisanal feel. This cuvée shines as a true connoisseur’s Champagne, showcasing the depth and diversity of the region beyond the familiar Chardonnay and Pinot grapes.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Champagne typically shows a pale, luminous straw color with green reflections and a very fine, persistent mousse. The nose is vibrant and expressive, offering notes of green apple, lemon zest, ripe pear and quince, layered with white flowers, fresh herbs and a touch of chalky minerality. With air, hints of grapefruit, subtle almond and a delicate brioche or pastry character may emerge, reflecting careful élevage. On the palate, Petit Meslier’s hallmark acidity takes center stage: it’s brisk, linear and mouth‑watering, with flavors of citrus, crunchy orchard fruits, unripe pineapple and sometimes a slight saline edge. The Extra Brut dosage keeps the wine bone‑dry and precise, highlighting texture and minerality rather than sweetness. The finish is long, tense and refreshing, with a lingering chalk and citrus peel character that invites another sip. While beautifully energetic now, this cuvée has the structure and acidity to age gracefully for 5–8 years from release, gaining more complexity, creaminess and nuance over time.

Production
Sourced from carefully tended vineyards in the Champagne region of France, this Petit Meslier Extra Brut reflects Laherte Frères’ commitment to terroir‑driven, low‑intervention winemaking. The vines are rooted in predominantly chalk and clay‑limestone soils, which lend the wine its taut structure and pronounced mineral profile. Vineyard work is typically conducted using sustainable or organic‑leaning methods, with meticulous attention to low yields and optimal ripeness, essential for a grape as naturally high in acidity as Petit Meslier. Harvest is carried out by hand to ensure that only perfectly healthy, intact bunches reach the press. In the cellar, gentle pressing preserves delicacy and purity, followed by fermentation in stainless steel and/or neutral barrels, often with indigenous yeasts to capture the character of each parcel. Extended lees aging adds texture and complexity before the wine is bottled for secondary fermentation. After a significant period sur lattes, it is disgorged with a very low dosage (Extra Brut), allowing the grape and terroir to speak clearly.

Food & Serving
This Champagne is superb with refined, high‑acid, and ocean‑inspired dishes that mirror its freshness. Think oysters on the half shell, scallop carpaccio, ceviche, sushi and sashimi, or simply grilled white fish with lemon and herbs. It also pairs beautifully with goat cheese, fresh chèvre tart, tempura vegetables and delicate vegetable dishes, as well as lightly seasoned poultry or veal. Serve well chilled at about 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight its precision and tension; as it warms slightly in the glass, more aromatic complexity will unfold. A brief 10–15 minutes in a carafe or opened bottle before serving can help the wine open up, but extended decanting is not necessary—this is best enjoyed for its lively, crystalline profile.

Producer
Laherte Frères is a respected grower‑producer based in Chavot, in the Côteaux Sud d’Épernay area of Champagne, France. Founded in the late 19th century, the estate has remained family‑run, with successive generations deepening its focus on expressing individual terroirs and lesser‑known grape varieties. Today, Laherte Frères is widely admired for its thoughtful, hands‑on farming—often organic or biodynamic in spirit—and precise, artisanal winemaking that showcases Champagne’s diversity beyond the grandes marques. Their work with historic varieties like Petit Meslier underlines their role as one of the region’s most inquisitive and terroir‑driven producers, earning them a loyal following among sommeliers and wine enthusiasts seeking authentic, characterful Champagnes.
