Description

Laherte Frères Champagne Les Rouges Maisons Extra Brut is a characterful grower Champagne that puts Pinot Noir center stage. Crafted from carefully ripened grapes and raised patiently in oak, it showcases the grape’s full depth and nuance, translated into an elegant, finely chiselled style. This cuvée is the culmination of long, attentive work in the vineyards and cellar, revealing the richness and complexity of Pinot Noir with remarkable finesse.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Les Rouges Maisons pours a luminous, deep straw to pale copper hue, often with a subtle rosé-like tint that hints at its Pinot Noir origins, and a fine, persistent mousse. The nose opens with red orchard fruits and wild berries—think red apple skin, wild strawberries and raspberry—wrapped in notes of citrus peel, blood orange, and delicate spice. Subtle oak influence appears as hints of toasted brioche, hazelnut, dried flowers and a touch of chalky minerality. On the palate, this Extra Brut is precise and focused yet generous in texture. Juicy red and yellow fruits are framed by vibrant acidity and a very dry, mouthwatering finish, allowing the purity of Pinot Noir to shine without heaviness. You may find layers of cherry, redcurrant, and plum alongside citrus zest, gentle savory tones and a refined, saline mineral drive. The extended aging on fine lees in barrel adds creaminess and depth, balancing its taut, energetic structure. While beautifully expressive on release, this non-vintage cuvée has the concentration and backbone to evolve gracefully for 5–7 years, gaining more nuttiness, truffle hints, and complexity.

Production
Les Rouges Maisons is sourced from carefully tended Pinot Noir vines rooted in the chalk- and clay-rich soils of the Champagne region, a terroir that brings both ripeness and tension to this varietal cuvée. Laherte Frères place strong emphasis on vineyard work, harvesting by hand at full physiological maturity to capture Pinot Noir’s aromatic intensity and natural balance. In the cellar, fermentation takes place slowly in barrels, allowing each parcel to express its character and gaining subtle texture from the wood without overwhelming freshness. The wine then rests for around 18 months on its fine lees in barrel before bottling, deepening its complexity and finesse. Finished in an Extra Brut style with minimal dosage, it offers a pure, terroir-driven expression of Pinot Noir in Champagne.

Food & Serving
This refined yet structured Champagne pairs beautifully with a wide range of dishes, especially those that highlight texture and umami. Try it with charcuterie, duck rillettes, roasted poultry, veal tartare, tuna or salmon tataki, or richer seafood preparations such as scallops with brown butter. It also suits earthy dishes featuring mushrooms, root vegetables, or aged hard cheeses and mild washed-rind cheeses. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 8–10°C (46–50°F) to allow the aromas to unfurl. A brief 10–15 minutes in the glass or a gentle splash into a small carafe can help it open, particularly if served with a serious meal, revealing more of its Pinot Noir depth and subtle oak complexity.

Producer
Laherte Frères is one of the leading grower-producers in Champagne, based in Chavot in the Côteaux Sud d’Épernay, with family roots in the region dating back to the late 19th century. Over generations, the estate has built a reputation for meticulous vineyard work, a strong focus on terroir expression, and thoughtful, artisanal winemaking. Working primarily with their own vines and often employing organic or sustainable practices, Laherte Frères crafts Champagnes that are distinctive, characterful, and highly regarded by sommeliers and enthusiasts worldwide. Their single-parcel and varietal-focused cuvées, like Les Rouges Maisons, have helped highlight the diversity and potential of Champagne’s lesser-known sites, securing the domaine a benchmark status among serious Champagne drinkers.
