Description
Château Lagrange’s 2021 Saint-Julien is a classic Left Bank red from one of Bordeaux’s most respected Third Growth estates. Built on Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Petit Verdot in support, it offers the structure, finesse and ageing potential that have made Saint-Julien wines so admired over time.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine typically shows a deep ruby core with youthful purple reflections. The bouquet leans toward blackcurrant, dark cherry, cedar, graphite and a subtle floral note, with hints of spice and fresh tobacco coming through with air.
On the palate, it is poised and precise, combining ripe dark fruit with fine-grained tannins, fresh acidity and a mineral-tinged finish. As a young vintage, it should feel elegant rather than overly powerful, and it has the backbone to evolve gracefully over the coming years, rewarding cellaring with more complexity and softness.
Production
Produced in Saint-Julien on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Lagrange benefits from gravelly soils that naturally favor Cabernet Sauvignon and help produce wines with definition, drainage and aromatic lift. The vineyard’s blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot is harvested with careful attention to ripeness, then vinified in the traditional Bordeaux style to preserve fruit purity, structure and regional character.
Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C and, if opening young, consider decanting for 1–2 hours to let the wine open fully. It pairs beautifully with grilled lamb, roast beef, duck breast, venison and mushroom-based dishes, as well as aged hard cheeses.
Producer
Château Lagrange is a historic estate in Saint-Julien, classified as a Third Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Known for its consistency and refined Left Bank style, the château has earned a strong reputation for producing classically structured wines that reflect both the character of the appellation and the estate’s careful vineyard management and cellar work.
