Description
Lafleur 2019 is a profound and hauntingly beautiful Pomerol that showcases just how magical this tiny estate can be in a great year. Intensely perfumed yet effortlessly poised, it combines depth, finesse and energy in a way that immediately signals a truly grand vin. Often compared in spirit to the legendary 1982 Lafleur, this 2019 is already being hailed as one of the wines of the vintage in Bordeaux.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Lafleur 2019 presents a deep, radiant ruby-garnet colour with remarkable density at the core and a fine, bright rim. The nose opens gradually, almost shy at first, then unfurls with layers of rose petals, raspberries and sweet exotic spices, followed by notes of blood orange zest, violets and freshly rolled tobacco. As it breathes, darker hints of graphite, sandalwood, and subtle forest floor emerge, adding further complexity.
On the palate, this is full-bodied, seamless and incredibly layered, with a concentrated core of vibrant red and black fruits wrapped in lively acidity. The texture is striking: ripe, powdery tannins give structure without ever feeling harsh, delivering a sense of precision rather than power for its own sake. Raspberry, redcurrant and black plum are interwoven with citrus peel, floral lift and savoury spice, leading into a long, intense and persistent finish that seems to glow on the palate. Still very young, the 2019 has outstanding aging potential and will reward patience over decades, evolving gracefully for 20–40 years or more in a good cellar.
Production
Château Lafleur is a minute, jewel-like vineyard in Pomerol, on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, where Merlot and Bouchet (the local name for Cabernet Franc) are planted in roughly equal proportions. The terroir is a complex patchwork of gravel, clay, and sandy soils, lying just across the road from Pétrus, and this diversity of parcels is key to Lafleur’s trademark combination of finesse and depth. Yields are kept extremely low, with meticulous work in the vines and harvesting exclusively by hand, parcel by parcel, at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, vinification is traditional and minimalist: gentle extraction, fermentation in small temperature-controlled vats, and élevage in French oak barrels (a proportion new, depending on the vintage), with no excess makeup, allowing the character of the site and the blend of Merlot and Bouchet to take centre stage.
Food & Serving
Lafleur 2019 is a wine for finely prepared, flavourful cuisine rather than heavy sauces or overly rustic dishes. It is superb with roast lamb with herbs, veal sweetbreads, pigeon or other game birds, and refined beef dishes such as tournedos or chateaubriand. Truffle-infused dishes, wild mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses (Comté, Mimolette, or a mature Tomme) also bring out its complexity. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux glasses. In its youth, decant gently for 2–3 hours to let the wine stretch and reveal its full aromatic spectrum; with extended bottle age, a shorter, careful decant primarily to remove sediment will suffice.
Producer
Château Lafleur is one of Bordeaux’s most revered and rarest estates, a tiny, family-run property in Pomerol that has built a near-mythical reputation among collectors and connoisseurs. Unlike many of its illustrious neighbours, Lafleur has remained discreet, focusing on uncompromising quality and consistency rather than expansion or marketing. The estate’s history in the region stretches back to the 19th century, but it is under the guidance of the Guinaudeau family that Lafleur has firmly established itself as one of Pomerol’s absolute benchmarks. Known for producing profound, long-lived wines that marry the perfume and precision of Bouchet (Cabernet Franc) with the plush depth of Merlot, Lafleur stands today as one of the most sought-after names in Bordeaux, with its top vintages—like 2019—frequently cited alongside the greatest wines of the Right Bank.
