Description
Carruades de Lafite 2021 is the refined second wine of the legendary Château Lafite Rothschild, capturing the estate’s signature Pauillac elegance in a slightly more approachable style. Sourced primarily from the younger replacement vines scattered across Lafite’s famed plateau vineyards, it offers a beautifully poised expression of the vintage with precision, freshness and depth. This cuvée has long been prized by collectors as a gateway into the Lafite world, echoing the grand vin’s character while offering earlier drinking pleasure.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Carruades de Lafite shows a deep, vibrant ruby hue with youthful luminosity at the rim. The nose is finely etched and complex, opening with pure red berry notes and blackcurrant, followed by hints of cedar, graphite, dried orange peel and subtle florals, all wrapped in a delicately spiced, cigar-box nuance.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a lively, focused structure that reflects the classic style of the 2021 vintage. Ripe but taut Cabernet fruit provides a core of cassis and redcurrant, joined by Merlot’s supple plum tones and a gentle, savory touch from Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The tannins are fine-grained and well-integrated, giving both grip and finesse, while a fresh line of acidity keeps the wine energetic and precise. The finish is long, penetrating and saline-tinged, with lingering notes of cedar and citrus zest. Enjoyable in its youth after a short decant, it has the concentration and structure to evolve gracefully over the next 10–15 years, gaining further aromatic complexity and polish.
Production
Carruades de Lafite 2021 is drawn mainly from younger vines planted across the gravelly plateau of Lafite Rothschild’s historic Pauillac vineyards, where deep gravel over limestone and clay provides exceptional drainage and a classic terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are harvested parcel by parcel, with careful sorting to ensure only pristine fruit makes it into the blend. In 2021, the final assemblage consists of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc, showcasing the estate’s mastery of Bordeaux blending. Vinification follows the exacting standards of Château Lafite Rothschild, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse and purity of fruit. A portion of the wine is matured in traditional wooden vats rather than small barriques, lending a slightly different textural profile and highlighting freshness and precision, while still developing the subtle oak complexity that is a hallmark of the estate.
Food & Serving
This poised Pauillac is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, grilled ribeye, duck breast, veal chops or game birds. It also complements refined dishes like mushroom risotto, truffle-infused poultry or aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and structural balance. In its youth, a decant of about 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open fully; as it gains bottle age, a shorter decant will be sufficient primarily to remove any sediment.
Producer
Château Lafite Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most revered First Growths, with a documented history in Pauillac dating back to at least the 17th century and a reputation firmly established by the 18th century among Europe’s aristocracy. As a flagship estate of the Médoc, Lafite has been instrumental in defining the benchmark style of Cabernet-based Bordeaux—combining power with exceptional finesse and longevity. Under the stewardship of the Rothschild family since the 19th century, the property has consistently pursued meticulous vineyard management and thoughtful innovation while preserving tradition. Carruades de Lafite, as the estate’s second wine, plays an important role in showcasing the breadth and nuance of Lafite’s vineyards, offering wine lovers access to the château’s pedigree and savoir-faire in a more accessible, earlier-drinking expression that still reflects its storied terroir.
