Description
Carruades de Lafite 2010 is the celebrated second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild, offering a more approachable expression of this legendary Pauillac estate while staying true to its class and precision. From the outstanding 2010 vintage in Bordeaux, it combines depth, structure and refinement in a wine that is drinking beautifully now yet still has years of evolution ahead. This is a compelling way to experience the Lafite signature without stepping into full grand vin territory.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, 2010 Carruades de Lafite shows a deep, vibrant garnet hue with just the first hints of maturity at the rim. The nose opens with generous aromas of baked plums and boysenberry compote, layered with cool notes of menthol and fresh tobacco leaf. With air, more complexity emerges: clove, cedar, a touch of smoked meat and subtle graphite, all wrapped in a refined, Pauillac-typical elegance.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a poised, harmonious structure. Ripe, grainy tannins frame the dark, savoury fruit, giving the wine both grip and finesse. Flavours of blackcurrant, black cherry and plum are intertwined with spicy undertones of clove and pepper, along with hints of cigar box and mineral-laced earth. The acidity is perfectly judged, lending lift and freshness that carry the wine through to a long, spicy finish. From a great, long-lived vintage, this Carruades has excellent aging potential: it is already very enjoyable, but can continue to develop added complexity over the next decade or more if well cellared.
Production
Carruades de Lafite is sourced primarily from parcels on the plateau and gentle slopes surrounding Château Lafite Rothschild in Pauillac, on Bordeaux’s Left Bank. The gravelly soils, underpinned by limestone and sand, provide superb drainage and are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and small proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot in the classic Médoc blend. The grapes are meticulously hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, parcel by parcel, with strict selection to ensure only the best fruit goes into the blend. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, where each lot is fermented separately to preserve its character before blending. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—often including a proportion of barrels that previously housed the grand vin—allowing fine tannins to develop, oak to integrate gracefully, and the pure Pauillac character to shine through.
Food & Serving
2010 Carruades de Lafite is a natural partner for refined, savoury dishes. Classic pairings include roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye steak, duck breast, veal chops or game birds like pigeon and quail. It also works beautifully with truffled dishes, mushroom-based sauces, and hard, aged cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda or mature Parmesan. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and texture. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially at this stage of its evolution, to allow the wine to fully open and integrate its bouquet.
Producer
Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the most revered names in the wine world, a First Growth estate recognized since the 1855 Classification and a benchmark for Pauillac and the entire Médoc. With a history dating back to at least the 17th century, Lafite has long been associated with finesse, longevity and unparalleled elegance in Cabernet-based Bordeaux. Carruades de Lafite, the estate’s second wine, takes its name from the Carruades plateau adjacent to the main Lafite vineyards and has become highly sought-after in its own right. While crafted with the same meticulous care as the grand vin, Carruades is designed to be slightly more accessible in its youth, offering wine lovers a distinguished and more approachable entry into the Lafite Rothschild style from one of Bordeaux’s greatest estates.
