Description
Lafite Rothschild 2022 is a classically styled yet vividly modern Pauillac, already hailed as one of the most elegant First Growths of the vintage. In the glass it marries purity of fruit with an almost weightless intensity, delivering the signature finesse that has made Lafite one of the most sought‑after wines in the world. Early tastings have drawn comparisons to a contemporary interpretation of the legendary 1953, underlining just how special this release is.
Tasting Notes
In appearance, the 2022 Lafite Rothschild shows a deep, luminous garnet core with violet reflections, hinting at both concentration and vibrancy. The nose is remarkably expressive even in its youth, opening with sweet red berries and wild raspberry, followed by cool notes of mint‑laced cassis, violets, graphite and fine cigar box. Subtle hints of cedar, crushed stones and delicate spice add complexity with air.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full‑bodied yet feels almost weightless, with a velvety, silky texture that glides across the tongue. A vivid core of lively red and black fruits is wrapped in beautifully refined, ultra‑fine tannins, giving structure without harshness. The finish is long, perfumed and persistent, echoing notes of violets, mint, tobacco and dark berries. Already strikingly harmonious at this early stage, 2022 Lafite has the balance and precision to age gracefully for decades, with a prime drinking window likely opening from the early 2030s and extending well beyond mid‑century in top cellars.
Production
Sourced from the historic Lafite plateau and surrounding parcels in Pauillac, the 2022 Lafite Rothschild reflects deep gravel soils over limestone and clay that are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, giving the wine its hallmark elegance and mineral‑driven structure. The blend is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and small proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, each parcel harvested by hand at optimal ripeness and sorted meticulously in the winery. Vinification is carried out in temperature‑controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse and aromatic purity. The wine is then aged in high‑quality French oak barriques, predominantly new, in Lafite’s cellars, where élevage is tailored to the character of the vintage to enhance complexity without overwhelming the wine’s inherent delicacy.
Food & Serving
Lafite Rothschild 2022 is a natural partner for refined cuisine: think roasted lamb with herbs, tournedos of beef, venison or pigeon, as well as truffle‑infused dishes and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or old Parmesan. It also shines alongside simpler, perfectly cooked preparations where the quality of the ingredients can mirror the wine’s purity. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux stems to allow the bouquet to unfold. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and open the aromatics; as the wine matures, a more delicate decant just before serving is sufficient, mainly to remove any sediment.
Producer
Château Lafite Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates and a founding member of the 1855 Classification, where it was ranked as a Premier Cru Classé, the highest distinction for Médoc châteaux. Situated in Pauillac on the Left Bank of the Gironde, Lafite has been associated with the Rothschild family since the 19th century and is widely regarded as a benchmark for Cabernet‑based fine wine, prized for its grace, longevity and unmistakable style. Over the decades, the estate has continued to refine its viticulture and winemaking, combining meticulous vineyard work with thoughtful, restrained cellar practices. Lafite’s wines are among the most collected and traded in the world, and vintages such as 1953, 1982, 1996, 2009, 2010 and now 2022 have cemented its status as a reference point not just for Pauillac, but for great red wine globally.
