Description

Lafite Rothschild 2018 in Double Magnum (3L) is a benchmark expression of Pauillac and one of the most sought-after wines from Bordeaux’s Left Bank. Presented in this large-format bottle, it offers not only profound complexity and elegance, but also exceptional aging potential for collectors and special occasions. This vintage embodies the classic Lafite signature: aristocratic structure, refined power and a seemingly endless finish.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Lafite Rothschild 2018 is an opaque, deep purple-black, hinting immediately at its concentration and youth. The nose unfolds slowly with aeration, releasing layered aromas of blackcurrant juice, baked plums and black cherry compote, underpinned by dark chocolate, licorice, pencil shavings, cedar chest and a subtle ferrous, earthy note reminiscent of rich clay soil. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet incredibly intense, with a core of pure, mineral-etched black fruit that feels both precise and luxurious. The tannins are unmistakably Lafite: ultra-fine, satin-like and perfectly integrated, providing a framework of elegance rather than aggression. There is a deep, resonant length on the finish, where black fruits, graphite and cocoa linger with impressive persistence. While already showing its class, this 2018 is built for the long haul; it will benefit from a further 7–8 years of bottle age and has the capacity to evolve gracefully for 40 years or more, especially in this 3L format.

Production
The 2018 Lafite Rothschild is a classic Pauillac blend of approximately 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Merlot and 0.5% Petit Verdot, grown on the estate’s renowned gravel soils over limestone and clay. This exceptional terroir, with its optimal drainage and ideal exposure, is at the heart of Lafite’s signature finesse and aromatic precision. Grapes are hand-harvested in small parcels to allow careful selection at peak ripeness, then sorted meticulously before fermentation. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, parcel by parcel, to preserve nuance and terroir expression, followed by élevage in high-quality French oak barrels, a large proportion of which are new, to build structure, complexity and age-worthiness without overwhelming the purity of the fruit.

Food & Serving
Lafite Rothschild 2018 is a natural partner for refined, classic cuisine. Think roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, venison, or pigeon, as well as dishes featuring wild mushrooms, truffle, or a rich red wine jus. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and balance. Given its youth and concentration, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open fully, particularly from this Double Magnum format, where evolution is slower and more gradual.

Producer
Château Lafite Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most illustrious First Growths, recognized globally as a symbol of pedigree, longevity and refinement. Situated in Pauillac on the Left Bank of the Gironde, the estate’s history stretches back to at least the 17th century, with its reputation cemented when it was ranked Premier Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification. Lafite’s gravelly hilltops—among the finest terroirs in the Médoc—produce wines renowned for their aristocratic structure, subtle power and haunting bouquet. Under the stewardship of the Rothschild family since the 19th century, Lafite has consistently delivered some of the most collectible and age-worthy wines in the world, with the 2018 vintage standing as a modern classic in this storied lineage.
