Description

Lafite Rothschild 2018 is a benchmark Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most revered First Growth estates, crafted in a highly collectible and long‑lived vintage. A blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Merlot and 0.5% Petit Verdot, it marries power with the trademark finesse and precision that has made Lafite a reference point for classic claret. This 2018 showcases the estate’s historic gravely terroir in a wine of remarkable poise, purity and age‑worthy structure.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Lafite Rothschild 2018 is deep purple-black, almost opaque at the core, hinting at its youth and concentration. The nose unfolds gradually, rewarding a good swirl with layered, intoxicating aromas of blackcurrant juice, baked plums and black cherry compote. Subtle, complex details soon emerge: dark chocolate, licorice, cedarwood, pencil shavings, warm cast-iron and a touch of fertile clay, all wrapped in a fine mineral frame. On the palate, this is medium-bodied but incredibly intense, with a sense of effortlessness that is distinctly Lafite. Pure, mineral-laced black fruits glide over the tongue, supported by exquisitely ripe, ultra-fine tannins that feel both firm and silk-smooth. The wine builds in quiet power rather than force, finishing with epic length, depth and a cool, graphite-tinged aftertaste. Still tightly coiled, it will benefit from 7–8 years of cellaring before beginning to show its full complexity and is expected to age gracefully for 40+ years in a good cellar.

Production
The 2018 Lafite Rothschild comes from the château’s historic vineyards in Pauillac, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, where deep gravel soils over limestone and clay provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon to excel. The terroir’s excellent drainage and moderating proximity to the Gironde estuary help produce grapes of great concentration and balance. Harvesting is carried out parcel by parcel, typically by hand, with rigorous selection to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit makes it into the grand vin. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with meticulous extraction to preserve finesse and aromatic purity, followed by aging in predominantly new French oak barrels, where the wine slowly integrates its tannins and gains the signature Lafite elegance and complexity.

Food & Serving
Lafite Rothschild 2018 is a natural partner for refined, flavorful dishes such as roasted lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, venison or other game, as well as truffle dishes, mushroom-based sauces and mature hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and structural finesse. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open up; as it matures and the bouquet becomes more expressive, a shorter decant or careful slow-ox service will be sufficient.

Producer
Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the most illustrious names in the world of fine wine, classified as a Premier Cru (First Growth) in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Situated in Pauillac on the Left Bank of the Gironde, Lafite’s vineyards have been renowned for centuries for producing some of the most elegant and age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines in Bordeaux. Under the stewardship of the Rothschild family since the 19th century, the estate has become a symbol of refinement, precision and continuity, consistently delivering wines that are coveted by collectors, connoisseurs and top restaurants worldwide. Its reputation as a benchmark for classic claret makes each vintage, especially a great year like 2018, a significant and highly anticipated release.
