Description

Lafite Rothschild 2008 is a benchmark Pauillac and one of the standout wines of its vintage, combining classical Bordeaux elegance with remarkable depth and finesse. Crafted from a Cabernet Sauvignon–dominated blend, it reflects both the pedigree of this First Growth estate and the quietly outstanding character of the 2008 harvest. Long sought-after (not least due to the number 8’s significance for luck and prosperity in Chinese culture), this is a wine that has already earned its place among modern Lafite greats.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Lafite Rothschild 2008 shows a deep, vivid ruby color with a garnet rim beginning to emerge, signaling graceful evolution rather than maturity. The nose is complex and aristocratic, opening with high-quality unsmoked cigar tobacco, pencil shavings, cedar wood and graphite, layered over crème de cassis, dark berries, earth and a subtle hint of warm asphalt. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet superbly poised, with a refined structure and a spine of fresh acidity that keeps everything lifted and precise. Pure blackcurrant and blackberry fruit are framed by fine, tightly knit tannins, notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, earth and minerality, and a very long, linear finish. At 12.5% alcohol, it feels classically proportioned rather than powerful, emphasizing harmony and length over sheer weight. Already showing striking complexity and nuance, it will continue to develop for decades; expect a drinking window from roughly 2014–2045 and beyond in good cellars.

Production
The 2008 Lafite Rothschild comes from the château’s historic vineyards in Pauillac, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, where deep gravel soils over limestone and clay provide ideal drainage and encourage Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen slowly and evenly. The final blend is approximately 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, representing around 40% of the estate’s total production that year. Grapes are hand-harvested parcel by parcel and carefully sorted before fermentation in a combination of traditional wooden vats and temperature-controlled tanks. After vinification, the wine is aged in a high proportion of new French oak barrels, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and extended élevage, allowing its structure, aromatics and texture to knit together into the seamless, classical profile for which Lafite is renowned.

Food & Serving
This is a quintessential fine Bordeaux for the table, pairing beautifully with roast lamb (especially with rosemary and garlic), prime rib or grilled entrecôte, game birds, and refined dishes featuring mushrooms, truffles or root vegetables. It also works well alongside aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and finesse. In its youth and mid-life, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to unfold; older bottles should be decanted gently and briefly, mainly to separate the wine from any sediment.

Producer
Château Lafite Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most storied estates and a Premier Cru Classé from the original 1855 classification, long considered a global reference point for Cabernet-based wines. Situated in Pauillac on the Left Bank, Lafite’s history stretches back to the 17th century, with a reputation for elegance, longevity and finesse that has made its wines some of the most sought-after in the world. Under the stewardship of the Rothschild family since the 19th century, the estate has continually refined its viticulture and winemaking, combining traditional methods with meticulous modern precision. Its wines, including the 2008, are celebrated for their purity, balance and capacity to age gracefully for decades, and they remain benchmarks for what top-level Bordeaux can achieve.
