Description

Lafite Rothschild 1986 is a landmark vintage from one of Bordeaux’s most revered First Growth estates, now entering a majestic phase of its long life. This is a classic Pauillac of remarkable structure and finesse, combining depth, freshness and aristocratic restraint. For collectors and serious Bordeaux lovers, it represents one of the defining wines of the decade and a benchmark expression of Lafite in the 1980s.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 1986 Lafite Rothschild shows a deep, garnet core with brick and tawny hues at the rim, reflecting its graceful maturity. The bouquet is wonderfully complex and evolving: earthy blackcurrant and red berry compote intertwine with cigar box, cedarwood, dried tobacco leaf, and subtle hints of graphite, truffle and leather. Gentle notes of dried rose, forest floor and a touch of spice emerge with air, revealing the layers that only time can bring. On the palate, this wine is medium to full-bodied, concentrated and poised, with a velvety, refined entry that quickly builds into a lively, still-vibrant core of dark fruit. Ripe cassis, black cherry and redcurrant are supported by savory, earthy undertones and classic Pauillac pencil shavings. The tannins, while much more polished now, retain a firm, slightly austere edge typical of the Médoc’s 1986 vintage, especially noticeable on the long, persistent finish. Approaching its 40th year, it remains very much alive and structured, with further development possible for well-stored bottles; at this stage it is best enjoyed after extended aeration to reveal its full complexity.

Production
Château Lafite Rothschild is situated in Pauillac on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, where deep gravelly soils over limestone and sand provide ideal drainage and a naturally low-vigor environment for Cabernet Sauvignon. The 1986 vintage benefited from a warm, dry growing season, delivering small, concentrated berries with thick skins and powerful tannins. Grapes are traditionally harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, allowing strict selection in the vineyard and at the sorting table. Vinification at Lafite is classic and precise: fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, followed by long macerations to extract color, aroma and structure, and then extended aging in high-quality French oak barriques (a significant portion new), which helps integrate tannins and add subtle, cedary complexity without overwhelming the purity of the fruit.

Food & Serving
This mature 1986 Lafite Rothschild is best showcased with refined, classic dishes that echo its elegance and structure. Think roast lamb with rosemary, beef Wellington, dry-aged ribeye, or game birds such as roast pigeon or duck, as well as simple preparations of veal or beef with truffle jus. Aged hard cheeses like Comté, mature Gruyère or well-aged cheddar can also be superb companions. Serve at 17–18°C (62–64°F) and avoid over-warming the wine. Decanting is strongly recommended—at least 2–3 hours, and up to 4–5 hours for tighter bottles—to allow the wine to unfold its nuances and to separate it from potential sediment accumulated over decades in bottle.

Producer
Château Lafite Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most illustrious estates and a First Growth of the 1855 Classification, long celebrated as a reference point for Pauillac and Cabernet Sauvignon–based blends worldwide. With records of viticulture on the property dating back to the 17th century, Lafite’s reputation for producing wines of finesse, longevity and incomparable elegance has been reinforced across centuries and generations of careful stewardship by the Rothschild family since the 19th century. Frequently cited among the greatest wines of Bordeaux in top vintages, Lafite has achieved iconic status on the global fine wine stage, and the 1986 vintage stands as one of its most important and ageworthy releases of the late 20th century.
