La Poderina’s Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio Abate 2020 is made entirely from Sangiovese Grosso grown in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, in the heart of Montalcino. Its concentrated fruit, layered oak character and capacity for cellaring make it a distinctive expression of this celebrated Tuscan appellation.
Tasting Notes
Intense ruby-red in colour, it opens with aromas of black cherry and small red fruits. On the palate, it is balanced and complex, with generous fruit complemented by notes of vanilla and tobacco from oak ageing.
Its concentration and structure suggest good potential for further development in the cellar. Enjoy it now after aeration, or allow it to mature to let the fruit and savoury, oak-derived flavours evolve.
Production
The grapes come from La Poderina’s vineyards in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, where carefully chosen training systems help keep yields low and encourage aromatic concentration. They are harvested by hand, then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with daily pump-overs and délestage, followed by post-fermentation maceration. Malolactic fermentation takes place in oak, and the wine spends five months on fine lees with weekly bâtonnage before around 19 months of maturation in barrels.
Food & Serving
Serve at around 16–18°C with roasted game, other rich meat dishes or mature cheeses. Decant for about an hour before serving to give the wine time to open up; older bottles may benefit from gentler handling and a shorter time in the decanter.
Producer
Founded in 1988 in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, La Poderina is a Montalcino estate focused on wines that express the character of its local vineyards. Its Poggio Abate Brunello di Montalcino Riserva has received notable critical recognition, including a Tre Bicchieri distinction from Gambero Rosso for a previous vintage. The estate’s wines are made with the involvement of oenologists Cotarella and Pistucchia.
