Description

Kunjas Pošip 2020 is a characterful white wine from the island of Korčula, the spiritual home of the Pošip grape. Crafted from vines averaging 20–25 years of age and older, it showcases the sun-drenched, coastal terroir of southern Croatia with precision and authenticity. Produced in small quantities, this is a nuanced, terroir-driven expression of a native variety that has been cultivated here for generations.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Kunjas Pošip 2020 presents a bright, medium-deep straw color with subtle golden reflections, hinting at both concentration and careful oak aging. The nose is expressive and layered: ripe stone fruits such as peach and apricot mingle with citrus peel, Mediterranean herbs, and a delicate nuttiness from the Slavonian oak, alongside hints of wild fennel, dried flowers and a touch of saline minerality. On the palate, this Pošip is full-flavored yet finely balanced, with a generous, textural mouthfeel. Ripe orchard fruits and yellow plum are framed by fresh acidity, a discreet creamy note from barrel fermentation, and a savory, almost salty edge that speaks clearly of its island origin. The finish is long, dry and elegantly structured, with gentle oak spice and a persistent mineral line. Enjoyable now for its vibrancy and aromatic detail, it has the concentration and structure to develop added complexity over the next 3–5 years in bottle.

Production
Kunjas Pošip is sourced from some of the best plots on Korčula, including family-owned vineyards and long-held leased parcels, where vines grow on sun-soaked, stony soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The family cultivates around four hectares of their own vines, plus an additional hectare farmed under historic lease agreements, some dating back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, with certain plots reputed to host very old vines. Grapes are carefully harvested by hand, then undergo a six- to eight-hour maceration on the skins to extract aroma and texture before gentle pressing. Fermentation takes place in used Slavonian oak barrels (no new barrique), at a strictly controlled temperature of 16–18 °C to preserve freshness and avoid runaway fermentation, which, given the naturally high sugar levels in Pošip, could otherwise exceed 36 °C and halt prematurely. The result is a finely tuned balance between varietal purity, oak nuance and the distinctive maritime character of Korčula.

Food & Serving
Kunjas Pošip 2020 is a natural partner for the cuisine of the Adriatic and beyond. Pair it with grilled or baked white fish, octopus salad, shellfish, and simply prepared prawns or scampi, as well as roasted chicken, herb-crusted pork, and vegetable dishes featuring zucchini, fennel or artichokes. It also works beautifully with aged sheep or goat cheeses and Mediterranean mezze. Serve at 10–12 °C to highlight its aromatic lift and mineral freshness. A brief decant of 15–20 minutes can help the wine open up, especially if served in its youth or at the cooler end of the temperature range.

Producer
Vinarija Kunjas is a family-run estate on the island of Korčula, deeply rooted in the local winemaking tradition and particularly in the cultivation of Pošip, one of Croatia’s most important indigenous white grape varieties. Working a compact mosaic of vineyards—some under lease agreements that stretch back to the days of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy—the family has preserved old-vine sites and traditional practices while embracing thoughtful, temperature-controlled vinification. Their focus on small-batch production, careful vineyard work and sensitive use of large Slavonian oak has earned them a reputation among Croatian wine enthusiasts for producing authentic, terroir-driven wines that capture the rugged beauty and maritime climate of Korčula.
