Description

Krug Grande Cuvée 170ème Édition in magnum is the house’s iconic multi-vintage Champagne taken to another level of complexity and longevity. Built on the 2014 harvest and enriched with an unusually high proportion of reserve wines back to 1998, this cuvée delivers the depth, richness and precision that have made Krug a benchmark in Champagne. Bottled in the generous 1.5 L format, it offers a particularly refined evolution and is ideal for the table or for long-term cellaring.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Krug Grande Cuvée 170ème Édition shows a luminous, deep golden color, animated by an ultra-fine, persistent mousse. The appearance already hints at the richness and maturity layered into this edition. The nose is complex and exuberant yet impeccably refined: notes of ripe orchard fruits and dried stone fruits mingle with fresh pear, citrus zest, roasted hazelnut, brioche, honeycomb, delicate baking spices and a touch of crushed flowers. On the palate it is rich, full-bodied and explosive, with intense flavors of baked apple and quince, candied citrus, dried apricot, almond praline and subtle ginger. The dosage is beautifully judged, carried by a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity and a silken, chalk-tinged texture that keeps everything in perfect balance. The finish is very long, echoing with layers of spice, toast and saline minerality. In magnum, this edition has excellent aging potential; while already thrilling now, it will continue to gain complexity and harmony over 10–20 years or more under proper cellaring.

Production
The 170ème Édition is a blend of 51% Pinot Noir, 38% Chardonnay and 11% Meunier sourced from a mosaic of Krug’s preferred crus across Champagne, reflecting the region’s varied terroirs of chalk, limestone and clay. The base is the 2014 harvest, a year that challenged Pinot Noir and Meunier yields, prompting Krug to draw on an exceptionally high proportion of reserve wines for balance and depth. These reserve wines, some over 15 years old and dating back to 1998, are carefully selected and vinified separately in small oak barrels, allowing each plot to express its character before blending. After assemblage, the wine undergoes secondary fermentation in bottle and is aged extensively on lees, with this edition disgorged in autumn 2021 (Krug ID: 421062), resulting in extraordinary complexity, texture and aromatic detail.

Food & Serving
This magnum of Grande Cuvée 170ème Édition is a gastronomic Champagne that shines throughout a meal. It pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as butter-poached lobster, scallops with a light citrus beurre blanc, roast chicken with morels, veal sweetbreads, truffle risotto, aged Comté or Parmesan, and subtly spiced Asian cuisine where richness and umami call for depth and freshness. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the full aromatic spectrum to unfold. In magnum, and especially for bottles with some age, gently opening and giving the wine 10–15 minutes in the glass—or a brief, careful decant into a chilled, narrow carafe—can help it open up and reveal its most intricate layers.

Producer
Founded in 1843 in Reims, Krug is one of Champagne’s most revered houses, renowned for its uncompromising pursuit of quality and its distinctive philosophy of multi-vintage blending. Rather than emphasizing single harvests, Krug treats each vineyard plot as a separate ingredient and draws on a vast library of reserve wines to craft Grande Cuvée as the purest expression of the Krug style each year. The house’s use of small oak barrels for the first fermentation, meticulous attention to detail and very long lees aging have earned it a reputation as a reference for intensity, complexity and longevity in Champagne. Krug’s wines are among the most collected and critically acclaimed in the region, with Grande Cuvée standing as a benchmark for prestige multi-vintage Champagne worldwide.
