Description
Krug Clos du Mesnil 2000 Magnum is a remarkably rare Blanc de Blancs Champagne, drawn from a single 1.84-hectare walled parcel in the heart of Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of Champagne’s most revered Chardonnay villages. Crafted from one exceptional site and one vintage, it offers a pure and powerful expression of terroir, with the depth and precision that have made Clos du Mesnil one of Krug’s most sought-after releases.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows an intense golden hue that hints at its maturity and concentration. The nose is richly layered, with aromas of toffee apple, caramel, ripe citrus, and a subtle note of lightly toasted nuts, all underscored by a grainy, almost wheat-like warmth.
On the palate, it opens with impressive generosity and breadth. Flavors of brown sugar, candied ginger, and pecan give way to vivid citrus tension, building toward a burst of freshness and an exceptionally long, elegant finish. This is a Champagne with superb balance and outstanding aging potential, especially in magnum format, which should allow it to evolve gracefully for many years to come.
Production
Clos du Mesnil comes from a single vineyard plot in Mesnil-sur-Oger, a chalk-rich terroir prized for producing some of the finest Chardonnay in Champagne. The parcel is small, meticulously tended, and harvested for Krug in a way that preserves the individuality of the site and the character of the vintage. Vinification follows Krug’s precise, site-driven philosophy, allowing the wine to capture the concentration, finesse, and mineral drive that define this historic vineyard.
Food & Serving
Best served chilled at around 10–12°C, this Champagne deserves to be enjoyed with dishes that match its richness and complexity, such as lobster, scallops, turbot, roast chicken with cream sauce, or fine aged Comté. Decanting is generally not necessary, but a short period in the glass can help reveal its layered aromas and refine its texture.
Producer
Champagne Krug was founded in 1843 and has long been regarded as one of the great houses of Champagne, known for precision, depth, and uncompromising quality. Clos du Mesnil became part of Krug’s history in 1979, when the Krug brothers pioneered the idea of a Champagne made from a single parcel and a single year—an approach that was highly unconventional at the time. Today, it stands as one of the house’s most iconic cuvées and a benchmark for terroir-driven Champagne.
