Description
Krug Clos d’Ambonnay 1996 is one of Champagne’s rarest and most coveted single-vineyard expressions, produced from a tiny walled parcel in Ambonnay planted entirely to Pinot Noir. It captures the depth, precision, and extraordinary aging capacity that have made Krug a benchmark for prestige Champagne for generations.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a luminous golden hue with fine, persistent bubbles. The bouquet is layered and complex, unfolding with notes of ripe orchard fruit, citrus peel, toasted brioche, hazelnut, spice, and delicate floral accents, alongside the subtle mineral tension that marks great Pinot Noir Champagne.
On the palate, it is remarkably concentrated and silky, balancing richness with freshness and a long, driving finish. The structure is powerful yet precise, with mature complexity and exceptional harmony. This is a Champagne built for cellaring and can continue to evolve gracefully for many years, gaining further depth and nuance over time.
Production
Clos d’Ambonnay comes from a tiny monopole within the village of Ambonnay, one of Champagne’s most celebrated terroirs for Pinot Noir. The parcel’s chalk-rich soils and protected location contribute to the wine’s intensity, finesse, and signature mineral backbone. Harvested by hand and vinified with Krug’s exacting attention to detail, the wine is crafted in the house’s traditional style with long aging on the lees to build complexity and refinement.
Food & Serving
This Champagne pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as lobster, scallops, truffle risotto, roast poultry, or aged Parmesan. Serve chilled at around 10–12°C, and consider decanting briefly if the bottle is particularly mature, though careful opening and a little time in the glass are often enough to reveal its full aromatic range.
Producer
Founded in 1843, Krug is one of Champagne’s most prestigious houses, renowned for its uncompromising pursuit of depth, individuality, and elegance. The house is admired for its meticulously crafted cuvées and for elevating Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Meunier through extended maturation and blending expertise. Clos d’Ambonnay stands as one of Krug’s most iconic and limited creations, underscoring the house’s reputation for excellence and rarity.
