Description
Krug 1998 is a rare vintage Champagne that celebrates the character of a single harvest with Krug’s signature depth and precision. This Jeroboam format adds extra presence and cellar appeal, making it especially attractive for collectors and special occasions. Known as a tribute to Chardonnay, it stands out as only the second Krug vintage, after 1981, in which Chardonnay took the leading role.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, bright golden color that signals the balance between freshness and maturity. The nose is expressive and layered, with notes of bread, hazelnuts, dried fruit, caramelized orange peel, and, with time in the glass, hints of cocoa, pepper, and gingerbread.
On the palate, it is defined by remarkable purity, precision, and elegance, with flavors of crystallized citrus, caramelized orange peel, dried fruit, pepper, and gingerbread carried by a soft, creamy texture. The finish is exceptionally long and refined, and while it is already beautifully expressive, it has the structure to continue developing gracefully for years.
Production
Krug Vintage is made only from the most expressive wines of a single year, then aged for more than ten years in Krug’s cellars before release. The 1998 vintage reflects the strong personality of the year’s Chardonnay, supported by the classic Champagne trio of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, though with Chardonnay taking the lead in the blend. The result is a wine shaped by both the distinct character of the harvest and Krug’s patient, meticulous élevage.
Food & Serving
This Champagne pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as lobster, scallops, roast poultry, truffle risotto, or aged hard cheeses. Serve chilled at around 10–12°C to fully appreciate its complexity and texture. Decanting is not generally necessary, but a few minutes in the glass can help reveal its more nuanced aromas.
