Korta Katarina Winemaker's Selection 2017

Korta Katarina Winemaker’s Selection 2017 is a refined, small-selection expression of Plavac Mali from Croatia’s Dalmatian coast, showing the depth, warmth, and coastal character that have made this native grape one of the country’s most celebrated. Crafted only from the barrels that developed the most seamless harmony between wine and oak, it offers a polished, cellar-aged interpretation of one of Southern Dalmatia’s signature reds.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep garnet to ruby hue with hints of maturity at the rim. The nose is layered and expressive, combining dark cherry, plum, dried Mediterranean herbs, sweet spice, cedar, and subtle earthy notes, with the oak lending elegance rather than dominance. On the palate, it is powerful yet composed, with concentrated black and red fruit, fine-grained tannins, and a long, savory finish marked by spice, mineral depth, and a touch of coastal salinity. Thanks to its extended aging, the texture is silky and integrated, and it should continue to hold well for several more years, with room to evolve further in bottle.

Production
Made from Plavac Mali grown in Croatia’s Srednja Dalmacija region, this wine reflects the sun-drenched, coastal terroir that defines the variety’s best expressions. The grapes are carefully selected, and the wine is then matured for an extended period in barrel, with only the most harmonious barrels chosen for the Winemaker’s Selection through a reverse selection process that prioritizes balance, integration, and age-worthy structure.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for grilled lamb, roasted game, slow-braised beef, dry-aged steaks, and richly flavored Mediterranean dishes such as lamb with herbs, aubergine, or tomato-based stews. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes to allow the aromas to open fully and the tannins to soften.
