Kongsgaard’s The Judge is one of Napa Valley’s most iconic Chardonnay bottlings, crafted with an uncompromising focus on intensity, concentration, and precision. From a tiny high-elevation parcel and made with a natural, hands-off approach, it captures the power and finesse that have made John Kongsgaard one of California’s most respected Chardonnay producers.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, The Judge shows a rich, luminous golden color that hints at its depth and concentration. The nose is layered and expressive, with aromas of lemon curd, baked quince, toasted hazelnuts, flint, honey, and a subtle touch of vanilla and beeswax. The palate is monumental yet beautifully composed, combining silken texture with driving energy and crystalline acidity. It delivers remarkable length and detail, with lingering notes of chalk, saline minerality, and citrus zest. This is a Chardonnay built for the cellar, with the structure and balance to age gracefully for 10–15 years or more.

Production
The fruit comes from a very small, high-altitude parcel in Napa Valley, farmed with extremely low yields and no irrigation, with careful attention to healthy soils and living vineyard conditions. The grapes are whole-cluster pressed and fermented spontaneously in new French barriques, followed by full malolactic fermentation and aging sur lie for around 22 months. The wine is neither fined nor filtered, preserving its full intensity and texture.

Food & Serving
This is a Chardonnay that pairs beautifully with rich, luxurious dishes such as lobster, roast chicken with truffle, creamy risotto, scallops, or aged Comté. Serve slightly cool, around 10–12°C, and consider decanting for 20–30 minutes if you want the aromatics and texture to open up even more.
