Kongsgaard Syrah 2023

Kongsgaard Syrah 2023 is a striking expression of Napa Valley Syrah, shaped in John Kongsgaard’s unmistakable style: thoughtful, restrained, and deeply expressive. Sourced from the high-elevation Atlas Peak vineyards, it brings together volcanic intensity, cool-climate freshness, and a Rhône-inspired sense of structure with distinctly Californian depth.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a dark, polished color that hints at its concentration and composure. The nose opens with blackberries, black olive, pepper, smoke, leather, and a lifted floral note of lavender, all layered over graphite and a faint iron-like minerality. The palate is cool, precise, and textural, with a juicy core of dark fruit framed by firm, gripping tannins. There’s plenty of energy here, along with savory spice and a lingering finish that feels both vibrant and composed. This is a Syrah built for the cellar and should continue to evolve gracefully over the next decade or more.

Production
The fruit comes from Kongsgaard’s own high-altitude vineyards in Atlas Peak, where volcanic soils and cool night temperatures help preserve natural freshness while building structure and tension. The grapes are whole-cluster fermented in small open-top fermenters with native yeast, then aged for around 20 months in French barriques, with only a small portion of new oak.

Food & Serving
This Syrah pairs beautifully with grilled lamb, duck, game, braised short ribs, and dishes featuring mushrooms, black olives, or smoked herbs. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for about an hour if drinking young to allow the aromatics and savory complexity to open fully.
