Kongsgaard Syrah 2020

Kongsgaard Syrah 2020 is a remarkable Napa Valley bottling from John and Alex Kongsgaard, widely regarded as one of the benchmark Syrahs of California. Sourced from Kongsgaard’s long-held parcel on the celebrated Hudson Vineyard in Carneros, it combines striking depth, precision, and power with the kind of complexity that has made the label a reference point for serious collectors.

Tasting Notes
The wine is almost black in the glass, hinting at its concentration before the first swirl. The nose is intensely layered with blackcurrant, blackberry, blood orange, black pepper, smoked meat, liquorice, tar, and dark earth, creating a dramatic and highly expressive aromatic profile. On the palate, it mirrors the nose with commanding dark fruit and a distinct savoury, smoky character, lifted by dried Provençal herbs and a long, persistent finish. It is already superb to drink now, yet has the structure and depth to age beautifully for at least 20 years.

Production
The grapes come from Kongsgaard’s parcel on Hudson Vineyard in Carneros, a site that has become increasingly impressive over the 20 years the family has worked it. The vineyard’s cool Napa-Carneros setting helps preserve freshness and aromatic detail in Syrah, while the resulting fruit is handled with a focus on purity, concentration, and site expression.

Food & Serving
This Syrah is an excellent match for grilled ribeye, lamb chops, slow-braised short ribs, venison, or richly seasoned game dishes. It also works beautifully with charred vegetables, mushroom ragout, and hard aged cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if opening young to allow the wine’s full aromatic range to unfold.
