Kongsgaard Syrah 2018

Kongsgaard Syrah 2018 is a standout Napa Valley Syrah from John and Alex Kongsgaard, widely regarded as one of the region’s great benchmark wines. Sourced from the family’s long-held parcel in the famed Hudson Vineyard in Carneros, it combines monumental depth, precision, and restraint in a way that has earned praise from top critics and collectors alike.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it is as dark as night, with an opaque, inky color that signals its intensity. The nose is remarkably layered and powerful, showing blackcurrant, blackberry, blood orange, black pepper, smoked meat, licorice, tar, and dark earth. The palate follows through with much of the same profile, led by dense dark fruit and savory smoked-meat character, then lifted by dried Provençal herbs and spice. The finish is exceptionally long and resonant, with the structure and balance to develop beautifully over the next two decades and beyond.

Production
The wine comes from Kongsgaard’s parcel in the celebrated Hudson Vineyard in Carneros, a cooler Napa Valley site well suited to Syrah’s balance of ripeness and freshness. The vineyard has been under Kongsgaard’s care for around 20 years, and the results have steadily improved as the vines and site expression have matured, yielding a wine of increasing depth and complexity.

Food & Serving
This Syrah pairs beautifully with grilled lamb, braised short ribs, venison, duck, or richly seasoned dishes with smoked or peppery elements. Serve at around 16–18°C and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours to allow the wine’s aromatic depth and structure to fully unfold.
