Description
Kongsgaard King's Farm Red 2017 is a refined Napa Valley red that delivers the house style of Kongsgaard at a slightly more approachable, everyday-drinking level. Crafted by one of California’s most revered artisan winemakers, this bottling brings together the richness of Napa fruit with the elegance and restraint that Kongsgaard is known for. The King’s Farm label has become something of an insider’s secret—offering a taste of top-tier Napa craftsmanship without the flagship price tag.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 King’s Farm Red shows a deep, saturated ruby color with a youthful, almost opaque core. The nose opens with generous aromas of blackcurrant, ripe plum and black cherry, layered with graphite, cedar, violets, warm baking spices, and a hint of cocoa and dried tobacco.
On the palate, this is full-bodied yet finely tuned, with concentrated dark fruit framed by vibrant acidity and polished, savory tannins. Notes of cassis, blackberry and redcurrant mingle with hints of espresso, pencil shavings, dried herbs and a touch of vanilla from sensitive oak aging. The finish is long, slightly mineral and spicy, suggesting excellent balance rather than sheer power. Drinking beautifully now with a short decant, it has the structure to evolve gracefully for another 8–12 years under good cellaring conditions.
Production
Sourced primarily from select Napa Valley hillside and benchland vineyards, King’s Farm Red reflects the region’s classic combination of warm days, cool nights and well-drained, rocky soils—ideal for Cabernet-led blends. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with careful sorting in the winery to ensure only pristine fruit makes the cut. Fermentation typically occurs in small stainless steel or concrete vats with gentle extraction to preserve purity and finesse, followed by aging in French oak barrels (a proportion new) to add complexity and texture without overwhelming the fruit. The result is a carefully crafted, terroir-expressive Napa red that channels the same meticulous philosophy as Kongsgaard’s flagship wines.
Food & Serving
King’s Farm Red 2017 is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes such as grilled ribeye, roast lamb, braised short ribs, duck with dark fruit sauces, or mushroom and truffle risottos. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Comté, Gruyère or mature Cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. A 45–60 minute decant helps the wine open up its aromatics and soften the tannins, especially in its youth, but it can also be enjoyed more casually by the glass over an evening, gaining complexity with air.
Producer
Kongsgaard is a small, cult-status winery based in Napa Valley, founded by John Kongsgaard, one of California’s most respected and distinctive winemakers. After influential stints at estates such as Newton, he established his own label, quickly earning acclaim for intensely characterful, low-intervention wines—particularly Chardonnay and Cabernet-based reds—that marry Old World sensibility with New World concentration. Working with low yields, minimal handling, native yeast fermentations and long, careful élevage, Kongsgaard has become a benchmark for artisanal Napa winemaking. The King’s Farm wines represent his more accessible, earlier-drinking expressions, while still carrying the precision, depth and integrity that have made the estate a reference point in the region.
