Description
Kongsgaard Hudson Syrah 2020 is a profoundly expressive Syrah from one of California’s most acclaimed artisan producers. Sourced from the fabled Hudson Vineyard, this wine marries Old World structure with New World intensity, delivering a Syrah of remarkable depth and personality. Limited in production and highly sought after, it has earned serious critical attention, including praise from Wine Advocate, making it a must‑have for collectors and Syrah enthusiasts alike.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Hudson Syrah is an opaque, deep purple with a vivid ruby rim, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is layered and seductive, opening with blackberries, blue plums, and black cherry compote, supported by notes of smoked bacon, cracked black pepper, violets, and a subtle graphite minerality. Hints of dark chocolate, licorice, and a whisper of incense emerge with air, adding complexity.
On the palate, this Syrah is full-bodied but impeccably balanced, with a core of ripe black and blue fruit framed by vibrant acidity and fine-grained, chalky tannins. Savory tones of charcuterie, roasted herbs, and black olive tapenade weave through the fruit, while well-integrated oak contributes nuances of espresso and baking spice without overshadowing the vineyard character. The finish is long, focused, and mouthcoating, suggesting excellent aging potential. Enjoyable now with a proper decant, it should continue to evolve gracefully for 10–15 years, gaining additional nuance and tertiary notes over time.
Production
The Hudson Syrah comes from the renowned Hudson Vineyard in the cool, wind-swept Carneros area of Napa Valley, where clay-loam soils over ancient marine sediments and a cooling influence from the San Pablo Bay allow Syrah to ripen slowly and develop intense flavor while retaining freshness. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal physiological ripeness, with meticulous sorting to ensure only pristine fruit makes it into the cellar. Kongsgaard is known for minimal-intervention winemaking, often employing native yeast fermentations, extended maceration, and gentle extraction to build texture and complexity. The wine is then aged in French oak (a portion new), allowing it to integrate and gain depth while preserving the vineyard’s distinctive savory-mineral profile.
Food & Serving
This Syrah is a natural partner for richly flavored, savory dishes. Think grilled ribeye or lamb chops, slow-braised short ribs, duck confit, game birds, or hearty stews with mushrooms and rosemary. It also works beautifully with smoked or charred dishes, venison, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal balance and aromatic expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth will help the wine open and soften the tannins; as it ages, a shorter decant is sufficient, mainly to let the bouquet fully unfold.
Producer
Kongsgaard is a cult Napa Valley producer founded by John Kongsgaard, long regarded as one of California’s most visionary winemakers. Working from a small, family-run cellar, Kongsgaard focuses on low-yielding vineyards and traditional, low-intervention methods to craft wines of remarkable intensity, texture, and individuality. The Hudson Syrah has become one of the benchmark Syrahs of Napa, showcasing the potential of cool-climate Carneros fruit and often earning high scores and critical acclaim from publications such as Wine Advocate. With a reputation for precision, authenticity, and ageworthy wines, Kongsgaard holds a significant place among Napa’s top boutique estates.
