Description
K.F. Groebe’s Morstein Riesling Großes Gewächs is a striking expression of one of Rheinhessen’s most celebrated sites, now in magnum format for extra cellar presence and aging potential. Sourced from the famed Morstein vineyard in Westhofen, this wine reflects the precision and pedigree that have made dry Riesling from this region so highly regarded. It also marks the continuation of a historic parcel, replanted to Riesling after its former life with Scheurebe, reinforcing Morstein’s status as a benchmark terroir.
Tasting Notes
The wine is expected to show a bright, luminous appearance with the clarity and finesse typical of top-site Riesling. On the nose, Morstein often brings a reserved but complex aromatic profile: citrus zest, green apple, ripe stone fruit, white flowers, and a distinctive mineral, chalky undertone that becomes more expressive with air.
On the palate, it should be taut, precise, and dry, with layered fruit balanced by vivid acidity and a deep, saline-mineral core. The magnum format supports slow, graceful development, and this Großes Gewächs has the structure to age beautifully for many years, gaining complexity, texture, and subtle petrol notes over time.
Production
The Morstein vineyard in Westhofen is one of Rheinhessen’s most renowned Große Lage sites, known for its limestone-rich soils and excellent drainage, which naturally encourage depth, tension, and mineral expression in Riesling. The parcel behind this wine was replanted after the old vines reached the end of their life cycle, and the second harvest from the new planting was already strong enough to be approved as a VDP Großes Gewächs. Vinification is carried out in the dry GG style, with a focus on preserving vineyard character, purity, and structure.
Food & Serving
This is an ideal partner for refined dishes such as roast chicken, veal, lobster, turbot, asparagus, or mushroom-based plates, as well as sushi and other delicate seafood preparations. Serve chilled at around 10–12°C. Decanting is not essential, but a short period in the glass, or a gentle decant for a younger bottle, can help the wine open up and reveal its full complexity.
