Description
From one of Rheinhessen’s most prized sites, the K.F. Groebe Riesling Aulerde Großes Gewächs 2022 in Magnum format captures the full depth and richness of Westhofen’s historic vineyards. Sourced from over 60-year-old vines rooted in the former valley slopes of the ancient Rhine, this dry Riesling combines impressive concentration with fine, stony elegance. As a VDP.GROSSE LAGE® and Großes Gewächs, it represents the pinnacle of site-specific, ageworthy German Riesling.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2022 Großes Gewächs shines a bright, medium straw yellow with green reflections, hinting at both ripeness and youthful tension. The nose is highly expressive and layered, opening with a spectrum of fully ripe yellow fruits: apricot, mirabelle plum and baked quince, joined by a subtle exotic touch and notes of candied lemon peel. Underneath the fruit lie delicate herbal nuances and a fine, sweet-tinged spice, all carried by a clear sense of minerality.
On the palate, the wine is dry, focused and tightly woven, with a precise, lively acidity supporting the generous fruit. Ripe stone fruit and citrus are wrapped in a fine phenolic grip, while the characteristic loess and green clay soils contribute a cool, salty-mineral undertone and impressive depth. The large old wooden casks lend additional structure and a gentle, textural creaminess without masking the purity of the fruit. Long, persistent and still youthful, this Magnum has excellent aging potential; it will gain further complexity and harmony over the next 8–15 years, and can easily evolve beyond that in a good cellar.
Production
The Westhofener Aulerde is one of Rheinhessen’s top sites, shaped by the ancient course of the Ur-Rhein river. Here, K.F. Groebe’s old Riesling vines—many over 60 years of age—dig deep into fertile loess-loam soils interlaced with layers of green clay that are rich in minerals and water-retentive, giving the wines both power and finesse. Harvest is carried out by hand, allowing careful selection of perfectly ripe, healthy grapes from these steep, exposed parcels. In keeping with the estate’s traditional philosophy, fermentation and élevage take place in classic large wooden casks, rather than small barriques or stainless steel. This gentle, slow vinification preserves the vineyard character, enhances structure and textural depth, and allows the Aulerde’s mineral signature to shine through.
Food & Serving
This powerful yet refined dry Riesling is a superb partner for sophisticated cuisine. It pairs beautifully with roasted poultry (such as guinea fowl or corn-fed chicken), veal in light jus, and pork dishes with herbal accents. Its depth and acidity also make it an excellent match for rich fish preparations like roasted turbot, sea bass with beurre blanc, or char with root vegetables, as well as modern vegetable-driven dishes and mild Asian-inspired plates featuring ginger, citrus or lemongrass. Serve at 10–12 °C to highlight both freshness and complexity. Given its youth and concentration, decanting for 1–2 hours—especially from Magnum—is recommended to fully open the bouquet and smooth the structure.
