Description

From Westhofen’s prestigious VDP.GROSSE LAGE® Aulerde, this 2024 Riesling Großes Gewächs comes in a generous magnum format. Its character is shaped by more than 60-year-old vines rooted in distinctive loess and clay soils over green clay, while traditional large-cask élevage adds depth and structure. The site itself recalls an ancient landscape: the prime vineyard slopes around Westhofen were once shaped by the course of the Ur-Rhine.

Tasting Notes
The expressive bouquet brings together ripe yellow fruits, including apricot and mirabelle, with a touch of exotic fruit, candied lemon and fine sweet spice. The vineyard’s mineral-rich soils and maturation in large wood are said to lend the wine a distinctive character, with added structure and depth.

Production
Aulerde’s exposed slopes and elevated plateau are part of a landscape shaped by the former Ur-Rhine. More than 60-year-old Riesling vines grow in loess and clay soils underlain by green clay, which supplies the fruit with minerals. As with nearly all of Groebe’s wines, the Riesling is matured traditionally in large wooden casks; harvesting details are not provided.
