Description
Karl May Großer Bruder 2021 is a powerful yet understated red blend from Rheinhessen that invites you to lean in and pay attention. Crafted from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, it brings together contrasting characteristics—structure and softness, depth and elegance—into a remarkably harmonious whole. This cuvée has already made a name for itself in Germany, with previous vintages placing among the top wines at the prestigious Deutscher Rotweinpreis, underscoring its status as one of the country’s standout Bordeaux-style reds.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Großer Bruder 2021 shows a deep, dark ruby color with violet reflections, hinting at both freshness and concentration. The nose is expressive and layered, with ripe plum compote and Amarena cherry at the forefront, supported by nuances of blackberry, subtle dried herbs, and a delicate smoky edge.
On the palate, this wine is full-bodied yet remarkably poised. The Merlot contributes a supple, velvety texture and soft, dark-fruited core, while Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc provide backbone, fine-grained tannins, and an elegant, savory lift. Flavors of stewed plums, black cherry, and cassis are interwoven with notes of toasted bread, leather, and a faint whisper of Black Forest ham, giving the wine a complex, almost umami-like depth. The finish is long, dry, and refined, with well-integrated oak and a fresh acidity that promises excellent aging potential over the next 8–10 years, possibly longer under proper cellaring conditions.
Production
Großer Bruder is sourced from carefully chosen Rheinhessen vineyards where the combination of gentle rolling hills, loess and clay-rich soils, and a relatively mild climate allows late-ripening Bordeaux varieties to reach full phenolic maturity. The grapes are harvested selectively, often by hand, to ensure only perfectly ripe fruit makes it into the cuvée. In the cellar, each variety is typically vinified separately: gentle crushing, temperature-controlled fermentation, and extended maceration to extract color, aroma, and fine tannins. The young wines are then matured in wooden barrels—often a mix of used and selected new oak—to add structure and complexity without overpowering the fruit, before being blended into a balanced, characterful final wine.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile food wine that pairs beautifully with robust, savory dishes. Think roast beef or lamb, slow-braised short ribs, venison, or hearty stews, as well as charcuterie featuring smoked ham or cured meats, which echo the wine’s subtle smoky and meaty notes. It also works well with mature hard cheeses and umami-rich dishes like mushroom ragout or truffle pasta. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Decanting for 45–60 minutes before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the aromatics to fully open and the tannins to soften.
Producer
Weingut Karl May is a family-run estate in Rheinhessen, today led by brothers Fritz and Peter May, whose shared vision and complementary talents shape the character of wines like Großer Bruder. Over the years, the estate has become one of the region’s notable addresses, particularly for expressive, terroir-driven reds that challenge old clichés about German wine being only about Riesling and sweetness. With a strong focus on careful vineyard work—often organic or sustainably oriented—and thoughtful, minimal-intervention winemaking, Karl May has earned growing national recognition. The estate’s success at the Deutscher Rotweinpreis, where Großer Bruder has already secured a podium finish in the cuvée category, underlines its role as a key player in the renaissance of German red wine.
