Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Pentagon shows a deep, opaque ruby core with a vivid purple rim, signalling both concentration and youth. The nose is layered and expressive: blackcurrant, mulberry and ripe plum are woven together with graphite, cedar, tobacco leaf and a subtle floral lift from the Cabernet Franc. Hints of dark chocolate, pencil shavings and baking spices emerge with air, pointing to quality oak integration. The palate is full-bodied yet finely balanced, with a firm, detailed tannin structure that frames the dark fruit rather than overwhelms it. Black cherry, cassis and blackberry compote are underpinned by savoury notes of cigar box, crushed herbs and a touch of violet, leading into a long, dry, mineral-driven finish. The acidity is fresh and linear, giving the wine precision and lift. This 2021 has significant aging potential; expect it to develop more complexity and tertiary notes of leather, truffle and dried flowers over 8–15 years if well cellared.

Production
Kaapzicht’s vineyards lie on the rolling, north-facing slopes of the Bottelary Hills in the Coastal Region of South Africa, with panoramic views toward Cape Town and Table Mountain. Here, decomposed granite and gravelly soils, combined with cooling afternoon breezes from False Bay, deliver small, concentrated berries with naturally balanced acidity—ideal for structured Bordeaux varieties. Grapes for Steytler Pentagon are carefully selected and hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, often parcel by parcel, to preserve purity and nuance. In the cellar, each variety is vinified separately, typically undergoing temperature-controlled fermentation and extended maceration to build depth and fine tannin. The components are then matured in French oak barriques—largely new and second fill—before blending, allowing the wood to support the fruit rather than dominate it, and ultimately bottled with the intention of long-term aging.

Food & Serving
This is a commanding red that shines alongside richly flavoured dishes: think dry-aged ribeye, roast lamb with rosemary, venison, slow-braised short ribs or a classic beef Wellington. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses such as aged cheddar, Comté or Gouda, and with earthy mushroom dishes or truffle-infused preparations. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight its aromatic complexity without emphasizing the alcohol. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth helps the tannins soften and allows the bouquet to unfurl; older bottles (10+ years) will benefit from a gentler, shorter decant to remove sediment and preserve delicate tertiary aromas.

Today, Danie Steytler Sr. and Jr. oversee approximately 190 hectares of vineyards and the cellar, with the next generation already stepping in, while Yngvild Steytler drives sales and exports. Kaapzicht is particularly celebrated for its world-class Pinotage from single vineyards and has earned both local and international acclaim for the Steytler range.
