Description
Kaapzicht Hanepoot Jerepigo is a luscious South African dessert wine crafted from sun-ripened Muscat (locally known as Hanepoot) grapes grown on the rolling slopes of Stellenbosch. Fortified to capture the grape’s natural sweetness and perfume at their peak, it delivers an indulgent, old-school Cape treat in a refined, modern guise. As a non-vintage blend, it reflects a house style that Kaapzicht has honed over generations, offering consistency, charm and a true sense of place.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Kaapzicht Hanepoot Jerepigo shows a deep golden to light amber hue, with bright highlights that hint at both richness and freshness. The nose is intensely aromatic and unmistakably Muscat: think ripe white grapes, orange blossom, rose petals and honeysuckle, layered with notes of apricot jam, golden raisins and a subtle hint of spice and honey.
On the palate, it is unashamedly sweet yet balanced by a gentle, natural acidity that keeps it from feeling cloying. Flavours of candied citrus peel, ripe peach, sultanas and muscat grapes roll across the tongue, supported by a silky texture and a warming, gently fortifying spirit. The finish is long, perfumed and grapey, with lingering floral and honeyed notes. Properly cellared, this style can age gracefully for 8–12 years or more, developing deeper caramel, toffee and dried-fruit complexity while retaining its core Muscat aromatics.
Production
Kaapzicht’s vineyards lie on the northern and north-western slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch, with decomposed granite soils and excellent exposure to the Cape sun – ideal for ripening Muscat to concentrated sweetness while preserving aromatics. The Hanepoot grapes destined for Jerepigo are typically harvested very ripe to maximize sugar and flavour intensity. In classic Jerepigo style, the fresh grape must is fortified with neutral grape spirit before or at the very early stages of fermentation, effectively arresting fermentation and preserving a high level of natural grape sugar. This results in a pure, grapey dessert wine that showcases the variety’s fragrance without heavy oak influence, offering a transparent expression of both Muscat and Stellenbosch terroir.
Food & Serving
This is a natural partner for fruit-driven and creamy desserts: think apricot tart, stone-fruit crumbles, pavlova, panna cotta with citrus, or a simple bowl of ripe summer berries. It also works beautifully with blue cheeses, aged hard cheeses, or a board of nuts and dried fruits for a relaxed end to a meal. Serve lightly chilled at around 8–10°C; this tempers the sweetness and lifts the aromatics. Decanting is not necessary, but opening the bottle 10–15 minutes before serving allows the perfume to fully unfold in the glass.
Producer
Kaapzicht is a family-owned estate in the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosch, with a history on the same farm dating back to 1946. The name ‘Kaapzicht’ – literally ‘Cape view’ – refers to the sweeping vistas from the property towards Cape Town and Table Mountain, framed by rolling vineyards that slope gently towards the north. The Steytler family, now into its third generation with Danie senior, Danie junior and the next Danie already on the scene, manages roughly 190 hectares of vineyards and the cellar, while Yngvild Steytler drives sales and exports with notable energy. Kaapzicht was among the first in the area to break away from the cooperative model and bottle their own wines, a bold move that helped establish them as one of Stellenbosch’s leading independent producers. While they are especially renowned for world-class Pinotage from single vineyards, their broader range – including this traditional Hanepoot Jerepigo – reflects both deep roots in the region and a strong, socially conscious commitment to their workers and community.
