Description
Joseph Phelps Insignia 2018 in an IMP 6L format is a statement piece for any serious cellar or celebration, showcasing one of Napa Valley’s most iconic Bordeaux-style blends at its most age-worthy. This vintage marries depth, precision and pure varietal expression, wrapped in the luxurious texture that has made Insignia a benchmark California red. Bottled in a rare imperial, it offers slower, more graceful aging and a truly grand table presence.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Insignia shows a deep, opaque garnet-purple color that clings to the sides with inky intensity. The nose is complex and perfumed: cassis and boysenberry mingle with black plum compote, dark cherry, and notes of cigar box, cedar chest and graphite, alongside hints of menthol, anise, clove oil and a subtle wet slate minerality.
On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied wine that is both powerful and finely detailed. Layers of blackberry, blackcurrant and black cherry are interwoven with mocha, espresso, baking spices and a touch of dark chocolate, framed by very fine-grained, polished tannins. There’s a vibrant core of freshness that keeps the rich fruit focused and precise, carrying through to a long, spicy, deeply flavored finish. In this 6L format, the 2018 Insignia has superb aging potential; expect it to evolve gracefully over 20–30 years or more, gaining further nuance, tertiary notes and silken texture with time.
Production
Insignia 2018 is a meticulously crafted blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec and 2% Cabernet Franc, all sourced from Joseph Phelps’ estate vineyards across prime Napa Valley subregions. The fruit comes from sites including Las Rocas and Barboza in the Stags Leap District, Yountville in the Oak Knoll District, Banca Dorada in Rutherford, Suscol in South Napa Valley, and the historic Home Ranch in St. Helena—each parcel contributing its own expression of Napa’s varied terroir, from rocky, well-drained slopes to alluvial valley-floor soils. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, then vinified parcel by parcel to preserve site character. After fermentation, the blend is aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels, a regimen that contributes structure, spice and refinement while allowing the concentrated black fruit and vineyard signatures to shine through.
Food & Serving
This imposing yet elegant Napa blend is a superb match for rich, flavorful dishes: think dry-aged ribeye or porterhouse, slow-braised short ribs, lamb chops with rosemary and garlic, venison, or truffle-infused beef dishes. It also pairs beautifully with earthy accompaniments such as wild mushrooms, roasted root vegetables, or aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) for optimal balance of fruit and structure. Given the format and youthful vintage, decanting is recommended: 2–3 hours for current drinking to allow the aromatics and texture to fully open, and even longer if you prefer a more evolved, harmonized profile.
Producer
Founded in the early 1970s, Joseph Phelps Vineyards quickly rose to prominence as one of Napa Valley’s pioneering estates, and Insignia—first released with the 1974 vintage—was among the region’s earliest proprietary Bordeaux-style blends. Over the decades, Insignia has become a reference point for Napa Cabernet-based wines, consistently earning critical acclaim and helping define the modern identity of the valley. With a focus on estate-grown fruit, meticulous vineyard management and precise, French-influenced winemaking, Joseph Phelps has secured a lasting reputation for crafting wines of depth, elegance and longevity, with Insignia standing at the very top of its portfolio and among the most collectible wines of California.
