Joaquin Taurasi Riserva Della Societa DOCG 2014 is the flagship wine from Raffaele Pagano’s fast-rising Campanian estate, made from exceptionally old, pre-phylloxera vines. Limited to just 3,500 bottles, it captures the power, elegance, and age-worthy structure that have made Joaquin one of southern Italy’s most exciting producers.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Taurasi shows a deep, dark core with the kind of concentration you expect from a top-class Aglianico. The nose is highly expressive and layered, combining forest floor, autumn leaves, tobacco, coffee, and dark chocolate with ripe plum, blackberry, and black cherry. On the palate it is full of energy and tension, with vivid acidity and a tightly woven tannic frame that gives the wine both authority and finesse. Already impressive now, it has the structure to evolve beautifully over the next several decades, gaining complexity and polish with age.

Production
This wine comes from a pre-phylloxera vineyard planted with 150-200-year-old vines in Campania, where the soils and climate provide ideal conditions for Aglianico to reach its full potential. The fruit is harvested in very small quantities from these ancient vines, resulting in an extremely limited production. Vinification is aimed at preserving the grape’s natural intensity, aromatic depth, and firm structure, allowing the character of the site and variety to remain at the center of the wine.

Food & Serving
This is a superb match for slow-braised meats, game, roasted lamb, aged cheeses, and rich mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16-18°C to allow the aromatics and structure to show at their best, and consider decanting for several hours if opening it young, as this will help the wine unfold more fully in the glass.
