Description
JM Sélèque Champagne Solessence Rosé Extra Brut is a finely crafted grower Champagne that captures the vibrant character of Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir from the heart of the Champagne region. This cuvée balances elegance and precision, offering a dry, gastronomic style of rosé that’s as at home at the table as it is for an aperitif. Made in small batches by J-M Sélèque, it reflects a meticulous, terroir-driven approach that has made the estate one of the rising stars in Champagne.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Solessence Rosé Extra Brut shines a pale salmon to light copper hue with delicate, persistent bubbles and a fine, creamy mousse. The nose opens with wild strawberries, redcurrants and crushed raspberries, layered with notes of blood orange, pink grapefruit zest, white flowers and a touch of brioche and chalky minerality.
On the palate, it is taut and refreshing yet subtly textural, with red berry fruit at the core – think strawberry, cranberry and a hint of pomegranate – framed by citrus, red apple skin and a faint spice note. The extra-brut dosage keeps the wine ultra-clean and linear, highlighting its mineral backbone and mouthwatering acidity rather than sweetness. The finish is long, dry and saline, with lingering red fruit and subtle pastry tones. Enjoy it now for its vivid energy and primary fruit, or cellar for 3–6 years to gain additional complexity, softer edges and more pronounced biscuit and nutty notes.
Production
Solessence Rosé Extra Brut is sourced from selected parcels in the Champagne region, particularly around the south-facing slopes near Épernay and the Vallée de la Marne, where chalk, limestone and clay soils contribute both tension and depth to the wine. Chardonnay brings finesse and citrus lift, Pinot Meunier adds supple fruit and charm, and Pinot Noir provides structure, color and subtle red-fruit intensity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve acidity and fruit purity, then gently pressed. Fermentation takes place in a mix of stainless-steel tanks and, for some lots, neutral oak to add texture without overt oak flavor. A portion of reserve wines may be blended in to ensure consistency and depth. After the secondary fermentation in bottle, the Champagne is aged on its lees for an extended period to build complexity and fine mousse before disgorgement with a low, extra-brut dosage to emphasize the wine’s precision and terroir expression.
Food & Serving
This extra-brut rosé Champagne is a versatile food wine, pairing beautifully with dishes that echo its freshness and subtle red-fruit character. Try it with salmon tartare, tuna carpaccio, sushi and sashimi, grilled prawns, or seared scallops. It also works wonderfully with charcuterie, cured ham, roasted poultry, duck breast with berries, or creamy yet delicate cheeses such as Brie, Chaource or young goat’s cheese. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight its precision and aromatic detail. A brief 10–15 minutes in the glass, or a short decant in a wide-based carafe for more structured bottles, can help the wine open up and reveal its full spectrum of fruit and floral notes.
