Description
J. Hofstätter Barthenau Vigna Herbsthofl Pinot Nero Riserva 2022 is a refined single-vineyard Pinot Noir from Mazon, one of Alto Adige’s most celebrated sites for the variety. Known for combining Alpine freshness with impressive depth, it reflects the heritage of the historic Barthenau estate, established around 150 years ago by Ludwig Barth von Barthenau. The estate’s single-vineyard wines hold a special place in the region’s history: in 1987, its Vigna S. Urbano became Alto Adige’s first officially designated single-vineyard wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riserva presents a bright ruby-red colour with the developing garnet nuances typical of a serious Pinot Noir. The nose is elegant and layered, offering aromas of ripe red berries, wild cherry and raspberry alongside floral notes, subtle spice and earthy undertones.
On the palate, it is refined and beautifully balanced, with concentrated red-fruit flavours, fresh acidity and silky tannins. Mineral depth and delicate savoury nuances add complexity to the long, polished finish. With its structure and freshness, the 2022 vintage should develop gracefully over the next several years and may gain further tertiary character with careful cellaring.
Production
The Barthenau vineyards are located on the Mazon plateau on the cooler eastern side of the southern Adige Valley. The area is particularly suited to Pinot Noir, while its clay-and-limestone soils help give the wines both elegance and depth. The wine is made from Pinot Noir grown on the estate; specific details concerning harvesting, fermentation and maturation are not provided.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 14–16°C to highlight the wine’s freshness and aromatic finesse. It pairs beautifully with roasted duck, veal, game birds, mushroom dishes and porcini risotto, as well as gently seasoned pork. Decanting is not essential for an early tasting, but allowing the wine to breathe for 30–60 minutes can help reveal its full aromatic complexity; older bottles should be decanted carefully if sediment is present.
Producer
Founded in Alto Adige, J. Hofstätter is closely associated with the region’s leading Pinot Noir sites and with the historic Barthenau estate, which has been in the family’s care for many decades. The estate’s Mazon vineyards are regarded as among Italy’s finest locations for Pinot Noir. Its pioneering role in single-vineyard wine production was recognised in 1987, when Vigna S. Urbano became Alto Adige’s first officially designated Vigna wine.
