Description
Jermann Picolit 2018 (0.375L) is a rare and refined dessert wine from Friuli-Venezia Giulia, crafted entirely from the elusive Picolit grape. Once used only in blends for Jermann’s iconic Vintage Tunina and Capo Martino, this cuvée is now bottled in purity, showcasing the full personality of one of Italy’s most treasured native varieties. The charming label, inspired by a rustic interior, hints at the warm, welcoming character of the wine inside.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Picolit shines a deep golden yellow with amber highlights, revealing its concentration and natural drying of the grapes. The nose is intensely aromatic yet refined, opening with notes of acacia honey, dried apricot, candied citrus peel, and ripe peach, layered with hints of chamomile, almond, vanilla and a gentle touch of sweet spice.
On the palate, it is luscious but beautifully poised, with a silky texture and vibrant acidity balancing its natural sweetness. Flavors of dried stone fruit, orange zest, honeycomb and baked apple unfold slowly, joined by nuances of caramelized nuts and subtle oak. The finish is long, elegant and slightly saline, leaving a lingering impression of honeyed fruit and fine minerality. With proper cellaring, this 2018 has excellent aging potential over the next 10–15 years, developing deeper complexity, more pronounced nutty notes and further integration of its sweetness and acidity.
Production
The grapes for Jermann Picolit come from carefully selected vineyards in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, where marl and sandstone soils and cool Alpine breezes meet Adriatic influences, giving both richness and freshness. Yields are naturally very low, as Picolit often produces sparse clusters, and the grapes are harvested by hand at full ripeness. After picking, they undergo natural drying (appassimento), concentrating sugars, aromas, and structure before pressing. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled conditions, often with aging in small oak barrels to add texture and complexity, while preserving the grape’s delicate aromatics. The result is a limited-production dessert wine that reflects both its unique terroir and a meticulous, artisanal approach in the cellar.
Food & Serving
This Picolit is superb with refined desserts such as almond tart, hazelnut cake, crème brûlée, panna cotta with apricots, or pastries featuring citrus and stone fruits. It also pairs beautifully with aged blue cheeses, foie gras, or a simple board of mature hard cheeses and toasted nuts. Serve slightly chilled at around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its aromatics and freshness. Decanting is not essential, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving allows the wine to unfold its full bouquet.
Producer
Jermann, today part of the Antinori family’s portfolio, is one of Friuli-Venezia Giulia’s most celebrated and pioneering producers, renowned for raising the profile of Italian white wines on the world stage. Founded by the Jermann family of Austrian-Slovenian origin, the estate became a benchmark in the 1970s and 1980s under Silvio Jermann, thanks to innovative vineyard management and meticulous cellar work. Their wines, such as Vintage Tunina and Capo Martino, have long been considered icons of the region. The decision to bottle Picolit as a pure, naturally dried dessert wine underscores Jermann’s commitment to preserving native varieties and expressing the nuanced character of Friulian terroir, further cementing the estate’s reputation for excellence and innovation.
