Description

Jermann Capo Martino In Rotars Bianco 2014 is a distinctive white wine from Friuli-Venezia Giulia that captures the essence of one of Italy’s most respected terroirs. Crafted from traditional local varieties—Friulano (Sauvignon Vert), Picolit, and Ribolla—this cuvée is a refined expression of complexity, depth, and regional character. Named after the Capo Martino hill purchased in 1991, it represents Jermann’s commitment to honoring historic vineyards and native grapes through meticulous, small-scale production.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Capo Martino shows a deep straw to golden hue, reflecting both its age and the richness of its blend. The nose is layered and inviting, offering notes of ripe stone fruits, preserved lemon, acacia blossom, and chamomile, interwoven with hints of honey, almond, and subtle spice. A gentle mineral edge and a touch of dried herbs add further nuance as the wine opens in the glass. On the palate, this is a textural, full-bodied white with a creamy yet well-structured mouthfeel. Flavors of peach, apricot, and baked pear are lifted by citrus zest, salt-tinged minerality, and a savory, almost saline undertone typical of top Friulian whites. The Picolit contributes depth and a fine, honeyed note without making the wine sweet, while Ribolla adds freshness and tension. The 2014 vintage is now in a beautiful drinking window, showing evolved complexity but still retaining good acidity; with proper cellaring, it can continue to develop tertiary notes—nuts, dried fruits, and more pronounced spice—for several more years.

Production
Capo Martino comes from a 7.5-hectare hillside vineyard in the heart of the Gorizia hills (Collio area) in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, an area known for its marly, sandstone-rich soils and excellent exposure. These conditions, combined with cool nights and warm days, help preserve acidity while allowing the grapes to achieve full aromatic ripeness. The vineyard, purchased in 1991 and carefully renovated between 1996 and 2003, is planted with traditional local varieties to maintain historical authenticity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure optimal selection and gentle handling. In the cellar, Jermann favors a precise yet respectful approach: careful pressing, controlled fermentation, and extended aging on the lees to build texture and complexity, often with a thoughtful use of large or neutral oak to enhance structure without overwhelming the natural character of the fruit.

Food & Serving
Capo Martino 2014 is a versatile food wine that pairs beautifully with refined seafood dishes such as scallops, lobster, turbot, and rich fish stews, as well as risotto with seafood or porcini mushrooms. It also complements roast poultry, veal in delicate sauces, and aged alpine cheeses or mature goat’s cheese. Serve at around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its aromatics and texture. Decanting for 30–45 minutes before serving is recommended, especially at this level of maturity, to allow the wine to fully express its layered bouquet and evolve in the glass.

Producer
Jermann is one of the benchmark producers of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, widely credited with helping to elevate the region to international prominence for high-quality, characterful white wines. Founded as a family estate with roots in viticulture dating back to the late 19th century, Jermann has steadily built a reputation for precision, innovation, and respect for terroir. The acquisition and careful restoration of the Capo Martino hill vineyard underscore the estate’s dedication to preserving historic sites and traditional native varieties. Today, Jermann is recognized as a leading name in Italian white wine, with numerous accolades from critics and guides, and Capo Martino stands as one of its flagship expressions of Friulian heritage.
