Description

Jermann Capo Martino In Rotars Bianco 2013 is a characterful white from one of Friuli-Venezia Giulia’s most respected producers, crafted from native grapes that speak clearly of their hillside origins. Named after the Capo Martino hill purchased in 1991 in the heart of the Collio/Gorizia hills, this wine is both a tribute to tradition and a benchmark for Friulian white blends. Its blend of Friulano (Sauvignon Vert), Picolit, and Ribolla showcases local varieties that have long defined the region’s finest, ageworthy whites.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2013 Capo Martino shows a deep straw to golden hue, a clear sign of both its age and its concentration. The nose is complex and layered, with ripe stone fruits, baked pear, dried apricot and yellow plum, backed by notes of acacia flower, chamomile, honeycomb, and subtle almond. With air, more savoury nuances emerge: hay, beeswax, a touch of spice, and a gentle mineral smokiness. On the palate, this is full-bodied yet finely balanced, with a rounded, almost creamy texture cut through by a persistent, saline freshness. Flavours of ripe peach, preserved lemon, dried herbs, and toasted nuts unfold slowly, joined by hints of candied citrus and a delicate bitterness reminiscent of almond skin – a hallmark of Friulano. The finish is long, savoury and mouthcoating, with a refined, gently oxidative complexity that suits its age. The 2013 vintage is now in a beautiful drinking window, with its primary fruit evolving into tertiary notes; well-stored bottles have the structure to continue developing nuance for another few years, but this is very much ready to enjoy now.

Production
The Capo Martino vineyard is a 7.5-hectare site on the Capo Martino hill in the Gorizia hills of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, a zone known for its steep slopes, excellent exposure, and ‘ponca’ soils – alternating layers of marl and sandstone that lend both minerality and tension to the wines. The vineyard, replanted and restored between 1996 and 2003, is dedicated to traditional local varieties such as Friulano, Picolit, and Ribolla, planted at relatively low yields to maximize concentration. Grapes are typically hand-harvested to ensure careful selection of bunches, then gently pressed to preserve aromatic purity. Fermentation usually takes place in a mix of stainless steel and large oak or acacia casks, followed by extended maturation on the fine lees to build texture and complexity. The result is a structured, ageworthy white that combines local tradition with Jermann’s meticulous, modern winemaking approach.

Food & Serving
Capo Martino 2013 is a natural partner for refined dishes that can match its depth and subtlety. Think rich seafood preparations such as scallops with butter and herbs, lobster, monkfish, or turbot, as well as risotti with seafood or wild mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with roasted poultry, veal in delicate cream sauces, and fine cured meats, along with aged mountain cheeses and semi-hard Italian cheeses. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to let the aromas fully unfurl without losing freshness. Given its age and complexity, a light decant of 30 minutes can help the wine open up, allowing its layers of fruit, floral and nutty notes to express themselves more clearly.

Producer
Jermann is one of Friuli-Venezia Giulia’s flagship estates, widely credited with helping to put the region’s white wines on the international map. Founded in the late 19th century by the Jermann family of Austrian-Slovenian origin, the winery truly came into its own under Silvio Jermann, who from the 1970s onward combined low-yield, quality-focused viticulture with precise, innovative winemaking. Based in the Collio and Isonzo areas, Jermann is renowned for its expressive, long-lived whites that honour native varieties while embracing modern standards of purity and consistency. Wines like Capo Martino have become reference points for the region, earning the estate a raft of top scores and critical acclaim and solidifying its position as one of Italy’s great producers of premium white wine.
