Description
Jean-Michel Gaunoux Meursault Rouge Les Criots 2023 is a refined and powerful expression of Pinot Noir from Meursault, an appellation better known for white Burgundy. Here, the wine shows a different side of the village: structured, terroir-driven, and beautifully balanced, with excellent value for lovers of classic red Burgundy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright ruby-red color with impressive clarity. The nose opens with ripe red and dark berries such as cherry and blackberry, lifted by gentle spice and a subtle smoky note from the oak.
On the palate, this is a medium- to full-bodied red with silky texture, integrated tannins, and lively acidity that keeps the wine fresh and precise. A mineral edge adds complexity to the fruit-driven core, while the finish is long, harmonious, and polished. It has the structure to age gracefully over the next several years.
Production
Made entirely from hand-harvested Pinot Noir grown in Meursault, Les Criots is produced with a strong respect for the land and for traditional Burgundian methods. The grapes are fully destemmed, undergo a short cold maceration, and ferment with native yeasts before maturing for around 12 to 16 months in barriques, including approximately 25 to 30% new French oak. This careful approach preserves purity while adding depth and subtle oak complexity.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs especially well with roast poultry, duck breast, veal, mushroom dishes, and lighter game. It is best served at 15–17°C, and decanting for 20–30 minutes can help open up its aromatics, especially in its youth.
