Description

Jean Fournier Marsannay Rouge Trois Terres Vieilles Vignes 2022 is a characterful Burgundy made from old-vine Pinot Noir grown in three of Marsannay’s most distinctive lieux-dits. This cuvée brings together depth, energy and precision, making it a compelling option both for immediate enjoyment and for cellaring. It captures the essence of northern Côte de Nuits terroir at a level of finesse that overdelivers for its appellation.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Trois Terres Vieilles Vignes 2022 shows a vibrant, deep ruby colour with a translucent edge, typical of finely structured Pinot Noir. The nose is expressive and layered, suggesting dark cherries, wild raspberries and redcurrants, supported by notes of crushed stones, dried rose petals, subtle spice and a faint hint of earth and iron that speaks of its ‘terroir-driven’ style. On the palate, the wine is precise and energetic, combining the sanguine, almost meaty power of Longeroies with the lively, electric tension of Es Chezots and the firm, disciplined structure of Clos du Roy. Fine-grained tannins frame juicy red and black fruit, while bright acidity keeps everything lifted and refreshing. Mineral notes and a savoury, slightly saline finish add complexity and length. While already accessible in its youth, it has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 8–12 years from the vintage, gaining more nuance and silkiness with time in bottle.

Production
Trois Terres Vieilles Vignes is sourced from old Pinot Noir vines rooted in three renowned Marsannay sites: Longeroies, Es Chezots and Clos du Roy, each contributing a distinct facet to the final blend. The soils here are classic Burgundy combinations of limestone and clay with varying levels of stones and marl, giving both power and finesse. Grapes are carefully harvested by hand to preserve berry integrity and to allow strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification follows a traditional, low-intervention Burgundian approach: gentle fermentation of whole or partially destemmed bunches, controlled extraction to respect the delicacy of Pinot Noir, and aging in French oak barrels (often with a modest proportion of new wood) to refine texture without masking the purity of fruit or the character of the terroir.

Food & Serving
This Marsannay Rouge pairs beautifully with roast poultry, duck breast, herb-crusted lamb, pork loin, veal dishes and game birds, as well as mushroom risotto, truffle dishes and aged semi-hard cheeses. Its balance of fruit, acidity and structure allows it to complement both refined bistro cuisine and more rustic fare. Serve at around 14–16°C to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. Decanting for 30–45 minutes in its youth can help the wine open up and soften the tannins; older bottles should be handled gently and either lightly decanted to remove sediment or served directly after a short period of aeration in the glass.

Producer
Domaine Jean Fournier is one of the benchmark estates of Marsannay, widely respected for elevating this northern Côte de Nuits appellation to serious Burgundy status. Family-run for generations, the domaine has championed careful vineyard work, low yields and sensitive winemaking long before Marsannay began attracting broader attention. With a strong focus on expressing individual terroirs such as Longeroies, Es Chezots and Clos du Roy, Jean Fournier has played a key role in demonstrating that Marsannay can produce wines of depth, structure and longevity. The estate’s commitment to meticulous farming and thoughtful, terroir-driven cuvées has earned it a loyal following among Burgundy enthusiasts and a reputation as a leading reference for the appellation.
