Description

Jean Fournier Gevrey-Chambertin Rouge 2023 is a vibrant expression of Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy’s most storied villages. Combining ripe, generous fruit with the precision and energy typical of the Côte de Nuits, it offers both immediate pleasure and the structure to evolve in bottle. This cuvée reflects the Fournier family’s long-standing commitment to authentic, terroir-driven wines from the northern reaches of the Côte d’Or.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a luminous carmine-red hue with youthful purple reflections at the rim. The nose opens with pure, ripe red fruits—raspberry and cherry foremost—layered with subtle floral notes, a hint of sweet spice, and a gentle touch of vanilla and toasted wood from its time in oak. A light, controlled oxidative nuance from barrel aging adds a sense of roundness and early complexity. On the palate, the wine is energetic yet supple, with a juicy core of red berries, morello cherry, and a suggestion of cranberry, framed by fine, silky tannins. The oak is well-judged, contributing texture and balance rather than overt flavor, and the natural acidity typical of Gevrey-Chambertin keeps everything in tension, giving length and lift to the finish. While already approachable in its youth, this 2023 has the structure to age gracefully for 6–10 years, gaining further depth, forest floor tones, and savory complexity over time.

Production
Sourced from vineyards around Gevrey-Chambertin in the Côte de Nuits, this wine is rooted in classic Burgundian terroir: limestone-rich soils with layers of clay and marl that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The climate is cool-continental, allowing Pinot Noir to ripen slowly and preserve its aromatic finesse. Grapes are harvested by hand to ensure careful selection in the vineyard and at the sorting table. In the cellar, the fruit is traditionally vinified, typically with gentle extraction to preserve freshness and finesse—cold maceration, followed by fermentation in vat and a restrained use of pumping over or pigeage. The young wine is then aged in oak barrels, with a proportion of used wood to avoid overpowering the delicate fruit, and a touch of controlled oxidation during élevage to round the tannins and bring harmony to the final blend.

Food & Serving
This Gevrey-Chambertin is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with roasted chicken, duck breast, veal, or pork tenderloin, as well as dishes featuring mushrooms, truffle, or root vegetables. It also complements semi-soft cheeses such as Comté, Tomme, or mild washed-rind styles. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail. Young bottles benefit from a brief decant of 30–45 minutes, which helps the fruit open and the tannins soften; as the wine matures, a gentle splash-decant just before serving is sufficient to remove any sediment and awaken the bouquet.

Producer
Domaine Jean Fournier, based in Marsannay at the northern end of the Côte de Nuits, is recognized as one of the leading estates in this part of Burgundy. Founded by Jean Fournier in the mid-20th century and now run by the next generation—most notably Laurent Fournier—the domaine has built a reputation for meticulously farmed vineyards, many of them old vines, and a strong commitment to organic practices. While particularly revered for its Marsannay and Côte de Nuits reds, the estate’s work in neighboring appellations such as Gevrey-Chambertin has further cemented its status as a reference point for pure, characterful Pinot Noir that faithfully reflects its origins.
