Jean Fournier Fixin 2023 is a vibrant young red Burgundy that captures the rugged charm of the Côte de Nuits in an approachable, beautifully crafted style. Sourced from carefully tended vineyards around the village of Fixin, it offers pure, expressive fruit and a clear sense of place. As one of the rising stars in northern Burgundy, Domaine Jean Fournier brings its refined, terroir-driven approach—well known in Marsannay—to this characterful Fixin.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Fixin shows a bright ruby to garnet hue with youthful clarity and lively reflections. The nose opens with red cherry, wild raspberry and cranberry, followed by floral hints of violet and rose petal, layered with subtle notes of spice, crushed stone and a gentle touch of earth.
On the palate, this wine is medium-bodied, with fresh, juicy red fruit at the core—think cherries and red currants—supported by fine, chalky tannins and a lifted, mouthwatering acidity. Nuances of underbrush, light peppery spice and a delicate mineral edge give structure and length, while the finish remains precise and elegant rather than heavy. Enjoyable now for its energy and purity, it should develop additional complexity over the next 5–8 years, gaining more silkiness and savory depth with some bottle age.
Production
The fruit for Jean Fournier Fixin 2023 comes from limestone-rich soils with clay and marl typical of the Côte de Nuits, giving the wine both tension and a refined, mineral backbone. Vines are farmed with great respect for the environment—Domaine Jean Fournier is known for organic, low-intervention practices that favor careful work in the vineyard over manipulation in the cellar. Grapes are picked by hand at optimal ripeness, with strict sorting to retain only the healthiest clusters. In the winery, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, often with a proportion of whole clusters to enhance aromatic lift and finesse in the tannins. Aging is carried out in Burgundy barrels, with a judicious use of oak to support the wine’s structure without overwhelming its delicate Pinot Noir fruit and terroir expression.
Food & Serving
This Fixin pairs beautifully with classic Burgundian dishes such as coq au vin, roast chicken with herbs, duck breast, or rabbit in mustard sauce. It also works wonderfully with charcuterie, roast pork, grilled lamb chops, mushroom risotto and semi-soft cheeses like Époisses, Reblochon or Tomme. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail. A light decant of 30–45 minutes can help the young 2023 vintage open up, softening the tannins and allowing the floral and mineral notes to fully emerge.
Producer
Domaine Jean Fournier is a respected family estate based in Marsannay, at the northern end of the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy. Over multiple generations, the Fournier family has built a reputation for producing characterful, terroir-focused wines that often punch well above their appellation. Under the stewardship of Laurent Fournier, the domaine has embraced organic and low-intervention practices, becoming one of the benchmarks for thoughtful, sustainable viticulture in the area. While best known for its expressive Marsannay bottlings, the estate’s work in nearby villages like Fixin highlights its broader influence in northern Burgundy and its commitment to revealing the nuanced personalities of each site.
