Description
Jacquesson Avize Champ Cain Brut Récolte 2009 Magnum is a powerful, bone-dry Blanc de Blancs from one of Champagne’s most respected houses. Sourced from a prized south-facing parcel in Avize, it combines old-vine depth, chalk-driven precision, and the generous ripeness of the 2009 vintage in a magnum format that enhances its elegance and ageing potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a fine, persistent mousse and the luminous clarity expected from Chardonnay grown on chalk. The bouquet opens with orchard fruit and exotic fruit notes, lifted by subtle toast and a faint brioche nuance.
On the palate, it is crisp and concentrated, with pear, roasted almonds, and a distinctly mineral, mouthwatering finish. Despite its dryness, it has impressive volume and texture, and the low dosage allows the purity of the fruit and chalky backbone to shine. This is beautifully drinkable now, though the magnum format should help it evolve gracefully over the coming years.
Production
The fruit comes from Champ Cain in Avize, a 1.3-hectare parcel at the base of a directly south-facing slope in the Côte des Blancs. The soil is a mix of clay, sand, and silt over chalk, and the vineyard is planted with old Chardonnay vines dating back to 1962, farmed using organic methods. The 2009 vintage was warm and dry in Champagne, producing fully ripe grapes with higher alcohol and lower acidity; the base wine was bottled in May 2010, disgorged in May 2019, and finished with a dosage of just 1.5 g/l.
Food & Serving
This Blanc de Blancs pairs beautifully with oysters, scallops, caviar, sashimi, lobster, and delicate poultry dishes, as well as hard cheeses such as aged Comté. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C. A short decant is not necessary, but giving the wine a few minutes in the glass will help reveal its layered aromatics.
