J. Hofstatter Trento Michei Extra Brut

J. Hofstätter Trento Michei Extra Brut is a refined mountain sparkling wine that reflects both precision and place, bringing Chardonnay from the high slopes of southern Trentino into a fresh, elegant style. Since Martin Foradori Hofstätter’s 2017 purchase of Maso Michei, the wine has also carried a strong sense of return and heritage, reconnecting the family with its ancestral roots in the region.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a bright, pale straw color with a fine, persistent mousse. The nose is lifted and pure, with notes of citrus, green apple, white flowers, and subtle toasted nuances from its sparkling-wine aging. On the palate, it is crisp and focused, with lively acidity, a dry Extra Brut profile, and a clean mineral finish that underlines its alpine character. The style is designed for finesse rather than power, and it should develop added complexity with a few years of bottle age, gaining more depth and savoury nuance over time.

Production
Maso Michei sits high in a secluded mountain setting at the end of the Ronchi Valley above the town of Ala in southern Trentino, where altitude and cooler temperatures help preserve freshness and aromatic precision. Chardonnay is harvested with care to capture purity and balance, and the winemaking is aimed at emphasizing the site’s mountain-driven tension, with traditional sparkling-wine vinification and extended time on the lees to build texture and complexity.

This Extra Brut is a versatile partner for seafood, shellfish, sushi, light white meats, and refined vegetarian dishes, especially those with herbs or creamy textures. Serve well chilled, ideally around 6–8°C, and no decanting is needed; simply open shortly before serving to preserve its freshness and fine mousse.
