Description
Inglenook Rubicon 2014 is a flagship California red from one of Napa Valley’s most historic estates. First released in 1978, it helped restore Inglenook’s reputation as a benchmark producer, combining old-world ambition with Rutherford’s world-class terroir.
Tasting Notes
Expect a deep, youthful colour with concentrated fruit and a polished, structured profile. The nose is likely to show ripe dark berries, cassis, tobacco, cedar, graphite, and subtle baking spice, with the Cabernet Franc lending lift and aromatic finesse. On the palate, it is full-bodied and refined, with layered black fruit, savoury notes, fine tannins, and a long, persistent finish. This is a wine built for the cellar and should age beautifully for many years, developing greater complexity and nuance over time.
Production
Rubicon is sourced from Inglenook’s best parcels in Rutherford, where warm days, cool nights, and the famed gravelly soils of Napa Valley create ideal conditions for structured, expressive Bordeaux-style wine. Only the finest grapes are selected from top vineyard plots, with a strong focus on expressing both vintage character and site. Vinification is carried out to preserve purity, balance, and ageing potential, resulting in a wine of precision and depth.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, venison, slow-braised short ribs, or aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young, to allow the wine to open fully and soften its structure.
Producer
Inglenook was founded in 1879 by Gustave Niebaum, a Finnish sea captain and wine connoisseur who set out to create a California estate capable of rivaling Europe’s finest. Today, the historic château is owned by Francis Ford Coppola, who has helped preserve and elevate its legacy. Inglenook remains one of Napa Valley’s most significant names, with Rubicon standing as its most celebrated wine and a symbol of the estate’s renaissance.
