A second wave of aromatics reveals darker nuances of licorice, wet slate, cola, grilled rosemary and subtle leather, giving a very complete and evolving nose. On the palate, this is a structured, full-bodied Brunello with concentrated fruit and a clear sense of power. Flavors of sour cherry, plum and dried raspberry are wrapped in savory notes of spice, tea leaf, underbrush and mineral. The tannins are firm, dry and powdery, providing a serious backbone that calls for food or further cellaring, while the 15% alcohol is noticeable but balanced by the wine’s richness and intensity. In magnum, the aging potential is particularly strong: best approached from the mid-term onward, it should evolve gracefully for 12–20 years from vintage, gaining even more tertiary complexity over time.

Il Poggione’s Brunello di Montalcino comes from estate vineyards in the southern part of Montalcino, where a mix of galestro (marl), clay and rocky soils, combined with warm days and cooler nights, deliver intensely flavored yet well-structured Sangiovese Grosso. The grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, ensuring strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with extended maceration to extract color, tannin and aromatic complexity. The wine is then aged for several years in large Slavonian oak casks, a traditional approach that emphasizes elegance, terroir character and long-term aging rather than overt oak influence, before further refinement in bottle—here, in magnum—for added longevity.

This Brunello is best matched with richly flavored, savory dishes that can stand up to its structure and alcohol. Think bistecca alla fiorentina, braised lamb shank, game birds, wild boar ragù, truffle pasta or aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to keep the alcohol in check and highlight the wine’s freshness and aromatics. In its youth, especially in magnum, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to fully unfold; older bottles may need a gentler, shorter decant mainly to separate the wine from any sediment.
