Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino 2015 is a powerful and deeply expressive interpretation of one of Tuscany’s most prestigious wines. Sourced from vines more than 25 years old, it combines concentrated dark fruit with savoury, earthy complexity and the firm structure expected from a classic Brunello. The outstanding 2015 vintage further highlights Il Poggione’s reputation for producing particularly rich and age-worthy wines within the Montalcino appellation.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby colour with garnet reflections. Its generous bouquet opens with candied cherry, followed by notes of damp earth, tobacco, smoke and crushed mineral. On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated, with ripe red fruit balanced by a firm, youthful tannic backbone. The finish is long and persistent, leaving a refined, almost dusty mineral impression alongside savoury and smoky nuances.
Although approachable with decanting, the tannins are still pronounced and will soften with further bottle age. This Brunello has the structure and concentration to develop beautifully over the next decade or more when stored in suitable conditions.
Production
Made from Sangiovese, the sole grape permitted for Brunello di Montalcino, this wine comes from Il Poggione’s mature vineyards in the Montalcino hills. The area is known for producing wines with notable concentration and power, shaped by its warm, dry climate and varied hillside soils. The grapes are harvested at full ripeness and vinified with the aim of preserving the fruit’s depth while building the structure required for long ageing. As a Brunello di Montalcino, the wine undergoes extended maturation before release, allowing its fruit, tannins and savoury complexity to integrate.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 18°C. Decant for one to two hours before serving, particularly while the wine is young, to help soften its tannins and open its aromatic profile. Its richness and structure make it an excellent partner for Tuscan cuisine, including wild boar ragù, roasted or grilled beef, braised meats, aged Pecorino Toscano and hearty mushroom dishes.
Producer
Il Poggione is one of the historic estates of Montalcino and holds a distinguished place in the region’s wine tradition. The estate has long been associated with powerful, traditionally styled Brunello made from carefully tended vineyards and mature vines. Its wines are recognised for their depth, firm structure and excellent ageing potential, while the estate’s substantial production also makes its Brunello one of the more accessible ways to experience the character of this respected Montalcino producer.
